Emotional send-off for Briam Chimbetu

Spiwe Ncube

HARARE - It was an emotional end for the family, friends and fans of Briam Chimbetu, 42, the diminutive Orchestra Dendera Kings musician as he was laid to rest in the serene atmosphere of Chegutu cemetery this week.

The cemetery had swelled to accommodate the hundreds of Chimbetu fans who flocked to his funeral on Wednesday. Briam Chimbetu died on Saturday at St Annes Clinic in Harare.

Musicians from across the generations mingled with the public as they paid their final respects to the influential musician – who shot to fame basking under the glory of his late brother, Simon.

Some were old friends - others friends from the airwaves - but each had a story to tell about how Chimbetu - whose late brother Simon was conferred with hero status and interred at a provincial hero’s acre last year - had influenced their lives.

The lucky few members of the public who managed to fill the final few pews inside the cemetery were as diverse as the music he played. Old and young - some dressed in t-shirts and jeans, others in suits, school uniforms, and a leather jacket with Orchestra Dendera Kings splashed across the back – all scrambled for a place at his funeral.

They joined hundreds of mourners who braved the scorching heat to listen to the service. Emblazoned in a white cloth, shrouded in red flowers and foliage in honour of Chimbetu, his coffin was greeted at the cemetery with applause and carried by friends and relatives to its final resting place.

Many of the mourners, led by his wife and his five children, echoed the sentiment by wearing a splash of red in a black outfit, a tie, a scarf or a flower.

Tributes were paid by Policy Implementation minister Webster Shamu, Chegutu Mayor Francis Dlakama and Briam’s brother Allan, who talked of his “extraordinary brother”.

A family friend read out an affectionate letter penned by Chimbetu’s five children. In it, they paid tribute to their father and recounted tales of life with their dad, his love for music and their “lovely family home”.

For a man whose eclectic taste defined his career, music during the service ranged from guitar solos sandwiched between prominent vocal lines and repetitive guitar riffs. Briam played a wide range of music genres. But most of it was similar to that of his brother’s earlier band, the Marxist Brothers.

Briam had three albums to his credit but mainly sang alongside Simon, who had a string of hits during the 1980s and late 1990s.

Briam shot to prominence in 1989 when he was left to assume the position of Dendera Kings front man after his late brother, Simon, was jailed for car theft.

As “Chopper” – Simon’s stage name - was serving his prison term, Briam recorded albums Ruregerero, First Cut and The Missing Link with the Dendera Kings. He also played a key role in the recording of Simon’s best selling album Nguva Yakaoma. At the time of his death, he was band manager.

His farewell was a somber send off, for many who had been endeared to his Dendera music.

As the strains of church hymns died, mourners escorted Chimbetu’s coffin out of the hearse to his final resting place.

It was left to the mourners to show their final appreciation to the man who influenced so many with his music, with a final moment of silence as mounds of freshly dug earth were heaped on top of his coffin.

Fare the well, Briam
I met Briam in 2005 and did an interview for a paper I worked for then. I still have the cutting and the original pictures. It was at the National Sports Stadium. We watched Dynamos practice as we chatted in the terraces. He had one of his sons - - small guy by the name of Donovan. Later we went to the studio where Allan and the others were practising. Later Briam dropped me off in town. The guy was VERY courteous, almost embarrasingly so. And yet very wise. To Briam, I say you enriched my life with your wise words. May your spirit find favour with the Creator, Baba vaDon.

HIV/Aids and the Zimbabwean Musician(PhD Thesis- Gutu University of Culture and Arts)
When are our musicians going to come out in the open and state that they are HIV-positive, David Mankaba-style? If all these dead musicians who succumbed to Aids had taken the baton from Mankaba, I am sure we would be somewhere. Kuvanza, kuvanza. I once interviewed one of these late musicians and he excused himself to go to the restroom - fellah took almost 30 minutes in that toilet but wouldn't say a word about his condition. Only the truth will set us free.

To The Chimbetus
Tichiti nematambudziko nedzadai kukuwanayi, tinemi mukuchema uyo atisiya. l wish none of the Chimbetus got access to this site bcoz of some of the postings here. How on earth someone wld want to rub salt to the wounded Chimbetus by talking about HIV/AIDS, akuudza kuti akafa neAIDS ndiyani, akauya kuSurgery kwako ukamuDiagoniser AIDS? l appreciate the message you guys are trying to put thru but l think its just misplaced. Chemai nevanochema nekuti mangwana ndimiwo. On another note, people wil forever be secretive about their status coz of this kind of thinking yamunoita, start talking openly about HIV/AIDS without misjudging them for chihure zvamunongoita Malaria, headache or flu. Kuseka kwako kuchakuuraisa eventually.

Muongorori Warasika
Assuming you are responding to my posting above, you misread my meaning. What I am saying is this: many of our "public figures" are dying in part because of their own reckless behaviour. It is not a secret that many of the singers who die in Zimbabwe are dying of HIV-related illnesses. All I am saying is thatwe should not give "secrecy" or "privacy" greater value than the lives of those who are still growing. I am saying it is every singer's job to contribute towards an HIV-free tomorrow and part of that is raising the bar in terms of personal conduct. Not that anybody is a saint but we still need to be strong and make a good effort. I have heard a lot about what some of our best musicians, footballers, actors and the like did in their time. Granted that not everybody dies of old age but it pains my heart to think of what Leonard Dembo, Simon Chimbetu, Biggie Tembo, Paul Matavire, Dambudzo Marechera, Yvonne Vera and many others could have given to society had they lived beyond the late thirties and so on. Do you have a problem with people saying let's fight HIV by any means necessary?
Posted By Ramangwana Redu , : Oct 8 2007 09:31 PM
Denda irori
And just for the record, I am making no reference to Briam whom I knew very well and liked as a person and as a musician. I have a pretty good idea what took him and it doesn't spell HIV. But he worked as a musician and I am saying Briam could have done a better job of fighting HIV in Zimbabwe by throwing in a word or two about the wayforward. In case you don't keep a tab on statistics, virtually every family in Zimbabwe has lost a member to the scourge. Saka handisi kuseka vakafa nechirwere asi ndirikuti ngatiedzei kuzvibata nekuti tinopera tese.

Uzumba wareva
Wataura zvakanaka iwe wanyora pamusoro asi zita rako ndiro randisingadi kunyora nekuti harina unhu. The good thing you echoed my sentiments about public personalities and HIV that someone was trying to drown. Being role models, these musicians should do even better than the common man - it happens everywhere. Right here in Bush's country, every news channel is awash with news of Britney Spears' parenting weaknesses. Does that mean my average neighbor is an excellent parent? Not in the least. All it means is kana wava munhu wevanhu you are bound to be judged critically ALL the time, and rightly so, for you are a role model. Pasi nechirwere, pamebri nevaimbi nemimhanzi yedu inotapira!
Posted By Ramangwana Redu , : Oct 9 2007 01:21 AM
lets support each other
In most cases people are scared to come out in the open about being HIV positive. It is up to us that when we see that one of us is sick, show them love and do not discriminate. Support them in every way you can. Chete mabhoyi munonetsa, munekuwa too much. People talk as if they have never lost a family member or relative from HIV. There is a young lady I know who almost gave up everything, she was losing strength and struggling to walk, but people gave her support, now she is back on her feet and working. Lets rise up black people and support each other.

the problem as highlightted b4,public figures especially cabinet ministers wil never come out in the open and this makes it very difficuty for ordinary people to come out in the open.Look at a celebrity like Tuku he had an affair with Mwendi the late and he looks sick.Imagine what effect would this have on the young ones if Oliver had declared his Hiv status and i challenge him to take a public test to put these 'rumours ' to test .Shame on u Tuku

HIV / AIDS
Most of the comments above echo the thoughts of most pple about AIDS 1.Kunzi une HIV / AIDS zvinonyadzisa.. that thought is wrong!!! Accept your status, disclose it and advocate for behaviour change withinn your family, spheres and even nationally. HIV/AIDS once you acquire it, u have it till you die. You cannot run away from the fact BUT BEING POSITIVE DOES NOT MEAN KUTI YOU ARE DYING..u can still live and lead a healthy life. 2. Most people are dying of other diseases.. truth of the matter is that most Zimbos are dying of AIDS related illnesses .. ana TB, Pneonomia (spelling) , kaposi sarcoma and many other related illnesses. 3. Pesi panoenda murume kusmall house anoshandisa condom! thats a lie kungani kuma regular kwamunopedisira moita musina condom! my condolences to the Chembetu family, its not a show of disrespect by saying kuti most of these Chimbetu's are dying of AIDS... WE ARE FACING THE TRUTH. Imi amai masara itotsvagai about ARV'S so that u lenghthen your days and look after the kids

Rue WekuHwedza
Thanks, Rue WekuHwedza. That's what I have been saying - that the truth has to be said openly to save lives. Who doesn't know Tuku's story with Mwendi Chibindi, his late backing vocalist? Did he not run to the courts to stop Sunday mail from serialising Mwendy's diary? It is this hypocrisy that is killing us. Munoda kuvanza urwere kusvika zvazodii? Assuming Leonard Dembo died of Aids, how many people could have done some hard thinking and changed their lifestyles for the better? I am not a paragon of virtue but all I am saying is let's start on a new slate to save ourselves and those we love. What's the point of dying at 38? Food for thought.
