With the mixed martial arts influence in wrestling so strong in October, 2001, a tournament was held to determine who would face Kazuyuki Fujita and Naoya Ogawa on the 1/4/02 Tokyo Dome show. This tournament took place at the end of the "SURVIVAL 2001" on the "FIGHTING DESTINATION IN FUKUOKA" PPV at Fukuoka International Center. It featured Kensuke Sasaki, Yuji Nagata, Manabu Nakanishi, and Tadao Yasuda, and was a one night tournament. Kensuke defeated Nagata in the final, and would face Ogawa on the Tokyo Dome show. Nagata was scheduled to challenge Fujita for the IWGP Heavyweight Title, but Fujita's achilles injury caused a change of plans.
