Catalan Traditions

Catalonia is a country with thousands of traditions. Some of these are celebrated on specific days of the year by everybody, such as Saint Jordi’s Day (the Catalan Valentine’s day) on the 23rd of April. Other traditions are celebrated by specific groups of people during certain seasons of the year, such as Sardanes dancing or Human Castles (Castellers). Others are celebrated more locally on a specific day of the year in a particular town or region, such as a local town festival (festa major). There are also some traditions are celebrated even more locally, at the level of a family, such as a birthday or wedding.

This section will attempt to categorize Catalan traditions, according to the first two levels mentioned. For traditions concerning specific town festivals, see the section on Festivals. You can also find articles about people that stand out for their contribution to a particular tradition, both throughout history and in the present. In this section, as in all other sections, information will be added continually to ensure diversity, creativity and quality of material, complementing and improving the private tours culTOURa does around Catalonia.
