[Results] New Japan, 10/18/07 by Stuart - 18 Oct 2007

    --> "NEW JAPAN 35TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR ~ CIRCUIT 2007 TRUTH ~G1 TAG LEAGUE~" <--
The 2007 G1 Tag League started with just one surprise. Travis Tomko didn't arrive in time to start the tour, due to a schedule change in TNA, leaving Giant Bernard to fight Makabe & Yano alone, rather than forfeit the match. The big man was too much for the GBH team at times, but the numbers game was too much and like in the G1, Makabe pinned Bernard. The main event saw Tanahashi, in black pants, and Kanemoto revive their team from last year and defeat Iizuka & Yamamoto in a tough 20 minute match, the new IWGP Heavyweight Champion pinning Yamamoto. In the other match, the dream team of Chono & Akebono overcame BLACK's Goto & Milano, Chono pinning Milano. Kazuchika Okada's first full tour didn't get started today, as he was withdrawn from the show for unexplained reasons. Hopefully he can start up properly soon.

Three matches added to 11/11 Sumo Hall by Stuart - 18 Oct 2007

Chapter one of the new war between New Japan and TNA is set! TNA's Jeff Jarrett proposed the matches below earlier today and New Japan has accepted them! "SPEAR or GORE" pits GBH's Toru Yano against former NWA Heavyweight Champion, Rhino, in a heavyweight clash between two brawlers. Another former NWA Heavyweight Champion, Ron Killings, faces Tiger Mask in what could probably be considered a heavyweight vs. junior match, as Killings is supposedly 230lbs. And in a big junior tag match, BLACK's Minoru & Prince Devitt face the "U.S. dream team" of Christopher Daniels (as himself, not Curry Man) & Senshi.

New Japan vs. TNA begins on 11/11, Tomko wins more gold by Stuart - 16 Oct 2007
TNA Wrestling today announced that it will dispatch four big names to New Japan's 11/11 Sumo Hall show to begin the interpromotional war before the 1/4 Tokyo Dome show. "The War Machine" Rhino, "The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels (better known as Curry Man in New Japan), Senshi (Low Ki), and Ron "The Truth" Killings will represent TNA on the show, which will air live on PPV in Japan, and will go up against New Japan opposition.

Speaking of New Japan/TNA relations, the one man who does go back and forth regularly, Travis Tomko, now holds the tag titles of both companies. Added to his seven month IWGP Tag Team Title reign with Giant Bernard in Japan is more gold, as he and AJ Styles captured the TNA Tag Team Title at TNA's Bound for Glory PPV a few days ago.

Tanahashi vs. Goto signing ceremony by Stuart - 16 Oct 2007

The young generation continues to rise to the top of New Japan as a new era continues to be built. Tanahashi and Goto both put pen to paper last night, making their IWGP Heavyweight Title match on 11/11 official. Goto said he has aspired for this chance for 14 years, and finally gets it. He wants to achieve his promise to Ultimo Dragon and defeat Tanahashi. Tanahashi started his speech with this less than modest comment, "Firstly, there is no wrestler better than me!", but went on to say that he doesn't feel Goto has any respect for him. Goto said he gets no feeling of strength from Tanahashi, yet the IWGP Heavyweight Title is supposed to be the "symbol of strength". As such, he plans to crush Tanahashi, then has his eyes on facing Kurt Angle at the Tokyo Dome on 1/4/08.

A new way of helping by Stuart - 15 Oct 2007
As you can see down the left side, I've put some unintrusive Google AdSense code in an attempt to raise more funds for the site costs. I'm sure you know what they are for and if any of the links genuinely interest you, what you can do to help the site. Although usually forgotten - well, always actually - there is also a PayPal donation button down the left side in case you want to show your appreciation for the Puroresufan.com network and contribute. The site(s) will always be free of course, thus donating is as always optional. And if a popup ever appears, it is from some other source (ie, spyware in your computer) as I despise forced popups no matter how much profit they can make a site.

    10/18~10/28 full cards by Stuart - 15 Oct 2007
Full cards for the entire next tour, besides the last show at Korakuen. Match order is set for all but the last two shows below. As you can see, Ultimo Dragon star pupil, Kazuchika Okada, has completed his special training at the New Japan dojo and is ready to fully begin his New Japan career.

New Japan show at military base next month by Stuart - 12 Oct 2007
New Japan announced that it will run a full show at the "Camp Zama" U.S. military base on November 3rd called "CAMP ZAMA SLAMFEST". Tanahashi, Nagata, Chono, and Akebono are four of the big names who will be on the card. This is not a freebie show, as regular house show prices will be in effect, and there will be no opportunity for same-day purchase. There also appear to be very strict rules and regulations on getting in, such as no food or drinks, no products from countries like Iraq, North Korea, and Serbia, and the gloomy footnote that the sponsor won't take any responsibility for any accidents that may occur. New Japan is not dealing with selling the tickets, a separate company is.

Very late Palau 9/30 results by Stuart - 11 Oct 2007
New Japan ran a full show during its trip to Palau in late September and somehow I missed the results. I've archived them and since I'm posting this, I may as well put the results here too. I only learned there had been a show by reading this week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter, with Meltzer calling it a successful event.

New Japan vs. TNA on 1/4, two title matches set, Tanahashi married, more by Stuart - 09 Oct 2007
A big news update for the first time in ages. Perhaps the quiet and straightforward year for New Japan has just been the setup for bigger things.

New Japan and Total Nonstop Action (TNA) will go to war on 1/4 at the Tokyo Dome! President Sugabayashi and Tiger Hattori held a press conference last night to discuss the 1/4 show, and the president announced that after Kurt Angle defeated Brock Lesnar for the IWGP 3rd Belt, New Japan had asked TNA to return it. TNA offered no response, so New Japan sent Hattori to speak with Jeff Jarrett about it. This is where sides agreed that the best way for New Japan to regain its property would be in the form of a war with TNA at "WRESTLE KINGDOM IN TOKYO DOME II" on January 4th, 2008. Sugabayashi outlined his intention to have the IWGP belts defended on the show, as well as TNA's X Division Title. Depending on other matters, the 1/4 card could become a complete confrontation war between New Japan and TNA. Sugabayashi wants the IWGP 3rd Belt back and acknowledged the abnormality of having two titles with practically the same name. Kurt Angle will return to New Japan, holding the title Brock Lesnar left with. But who will step up to the plate and risk his company's name to try and take down one of the world's most famous pro wrestlers?

Hiroshi Tanahashi will officially make his V1 defense of the IWGP Heavyweight Title on 11/11 at Sumo Hall against the stunning comeback kid, Hirooki Goto. This was announced last night also, Goto being given a chance so many wait years for because of the remarkable progress he has shown. Tanahashi held a press conference to discuss his title win, among other things. He won the G1 Climax, then won the IWGP belt, and couldn't feel any better. Even the pain in his body after the half hour war with Nagata is what he calls a "comfortable pain", and he now feels he has proven himself to be the strongest. Tanahashi spoke of Goto, who decorates the 11/11 poster, saying his heart is strong and he has shown the ability to change the atmosphere in any building. Tanahashi explained his black shorts yesterday were his "Strong Style gear", and may wear them more from now on. When asked about the New Japan vs. TNA theme on 1/4, Tanahashi called TNA - where he gained some experience a couple of years ago - a "strong-minded organization" that is close to a Japanese style, with good big names and good young names. He called it a truly professional group.

    1. IWGP Heavyweight Title: Hiroshi Tanahashi (c) vs. Hirooki Goto

Tanahashi chose today to reveal what many have known for a long time, but what has been kept under lock and key. He announced that he is a married man, and has been in fact since 2003. A long time to hold this secret, but he most likely feels his popularity is becoming more established now, and he doesn't risk losing as many fans over it. Not only is Tanahashi married, but he has a young son and daughter. He apologized for not telling fans until now, but it is a secret no longer.

Koji Kanemoto will not be challenging Ryusuke Taguchi for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title at Sumo Hall. No, he gets that honour in his beloved home city of Kobe, when New Japan returns to Kobe World Hall on 10/28. Taguchi has been super-impressive of late by beating big veteran names, but "Aniki" in his home area may prove too much.

Final G1 Tag League outline by Stuart - 09 Oct 2007
For the second year running, Koji Kanemoto will be Hiroshi Tanahashi's partner in the G1 Tag League. Last year they were known as the "golden team" as Tanahashi held the IWGP Heavyweight Title and Kanemoto held the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title. Well, Tanahashi just won back the big one, while Kanemoto is again number one contender for the junior belt. Still, its somewhat of an anti-climax after Tana's partner was announced as "X", and we may never know if there were alternate plans. Hiroyoshi Tenzan is off the next tour, his grueling match with Hirooki Goto finally sidelining him with injury. Hopefully Tenzan can take some time off before he starts dropping falls to Yamamoto in his present condition, and hopefully he will return fresh and revived. Both GBH teams have been selected and they are Makabe & Yano and Jado & Gedo. Along with Tenzan, both Choshu and Koshinaka are notable absentees from the tournament. In other news today, it was announced that the 11/11 Sumo Hall show will, unlike yesterday's, be a live PPV telecast. And in one other random note, Kanemoto suggested in his post-match interview yesterday that the long-absent Wataru Inoue is either in or is on his way to Mexico for more warrior practice in preparation for what appears to be one final effort to elevate him to the level that was expected of him some years ago.

    1. G1 Tag League - Final:

[Results] New Japan, 10/8/07 by Stuart - 08 Oct 2007

New Japan Pro-Wrestling is moving and at today's first major show since a G1 Climax finale boasting the same main event, the young generation almost completely consumed older wrestlers towards the top of the card. In what will probably go down as their third match of the year candidate against each other in the same year, Yuji Nagata and Hiroshi Tanahashi had their closest fight yet. Clad in black tights, Tanahashi meant business, and showed that he is more than an equal for Nagata now. This match had everything you'd expect from these two, exceeding the half hour point in a real showcase of the New Japan heavyweight style, before Tanahashi dropped Nagata with a Dragon suplex, then landed his third High Fly Flow of the match to become the 47th generation champion, beginning his second reign. Tanahashi's V1 defense in the same building on 11/11 was also basically set up, but more on that below. Ryusuke Taguchi completed a grueling schedule by completing his third defense of the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title in just a couple of weeks. Fukumen World League winner, Tiger Mask, was V1 in Hiroshima late last month, then KAGEKI boss Azteca, and today it was another rematch from earlier in the year like the main event, as Taguchi faced the man he lifted the belt from, Minoru. In another spectacular battle, Taguchi scored his third successive win over the "Black Prince", showing that he truly has risen to the top of the junior division. HOWEVER, it could be curtains for Taguchi soon, after the ever-fearsome Koji Kanemoto won a contendership battle royal in the opening match, meaning it is likely to be Taguchi vs. Kanemoto at Sumo Hall next month in the young junior ace's V4 defense.

Hirooki Goto's comeback has been nothing less than remarkable. Completely unbeaten, he has looked sharp in the ring, with good ring presence, and has pinned names who were above him before he departed from Mexico. He reached a new height today by defeating upper tier star, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, in a match that some even called the best of the show. Goto looked great today and is sort of breaking a tradition where many young wrestlers tend to be somewhat unimpressive in the ring after overseas excursions. Goto bled fiercely in this match, but the heavyweight fighter showed how far he has come, making the GBH leader his step and pinning him following the Shouten. And so it seems that the young generation will lead next month at Sumo Hall, when Tanahashi vs. Goto looks to headline New Japan's holy palace. Togi Makabe achieved revenge over former tag partner Shiro Koshinaka, who betrayed GBH in favour of Legend. Koshinaka, who is about to go on his first excursion to Mexico in two decades, had to fight off some intervention from the ever troublesome Tomoaki Honma, and fell to Makabe's top rope King Kong lariat, the Unchained Gorilla still going strong after reaching the G1 semis in August. In a novelty dream match, Akebono defeated Milano Collection AT at his own game, submitting him with the Bono Lock! Milano was crafty enough to work around the astounding weight difference for a while, before it was too much.

New Japan continues to press hard for a revival. After "hiding" in Korakuen Hall for much of the year, today's show and next month's Sumo Hall show prove they are still thinking big, despite today's attendance showing things won't be easy. The company officially announced "WRESTLE KINGDOM II IN TOKYO DOME" for 1/4/08, New Japan continuing the long-lasting tradition of running the Dome on 1/4, even in these times. It looks as though they will run a "budget" setup again like last year, opening only the area and first floor, which will allow for around 28~30,000 seats.

Taguchi defeats Azteca in V2 by Stuart - 07 Oct 2007

Taguchi made a successful V2 defense of his IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title today, entering KAGEKI for the company's 10th anniversary show and beating its boss, Azteca, in a tough battle. Taguchi won with the Dodon and will therefore take on Minoru tomorrow in his V3 defense, after also recently beating Fukumen World League winner, Tiger Mask, in his V1 defense.

Nagata set to raid IGF by Stuart - 03 Oct 2007
Today's Tokyo Sports reported that IWGP Heavyweight Champion, Yuji Nagata, is likely to raid Antonio Inoki's IGF promotion in the near future. February has been touted as a possible date for Nagata's invasion, with The Predator and Montanha Silva surfacing as possible opponents.

Some reports suggest that New Japan is close to securing IWGP 3rd Belt holder, Kurt Angle, for the 1/4/08 Tokyo Dome super-show. Angle won that title in IGF from the man who left New Japan with it, Brock Lesnar. If Nagata could get past three potential defenses before then (Tanahashi, winner of Tenzan vs. Goto, and possibly an end-of-year defense in Aichi), this could perhaps set up the ultimate IWGP vs. IWGP summit of Nagata vs. Angle.

Relations between New Japan and Antonio Inoki remain a mystery. New Japan wrestlers recently ate and drank at a branch of the Inoki Bar, and Inoki himself paid the tab. In recent days, New Japan wrestlers have been in Palau, the island nation with which Inoki has close ties.

Schedule for last tour of '07 by Stuart - 28 Sep 2007
Eight shows will comprise New Japan's last series of 2007, "NEW JAPAN 35TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR ~ CIRCUIT 2007 NEW JAPAN ALIVE", which runs from 11/23 to 12/9. Despite New Japan apparently trying to break the record of how many Korakuen Hall shows can be run in a year, there is no event there this tour - but between shows one and two of the tour, LOCK UP will be at Korakuen, so near enough. Some sizey buildings, but there is to be no third show at Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium, instead one at the smaller sub arena. The customary Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium show will finish the tour, while New Japan stops by hotbed Kyoto City Gymnasium earlier on.

Nagata vs. Tanahashi signing ceremony by Stuart - 26 Sep 2007

Yuji Nagata vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi for the IWGP Heavyweight Title on 10/8 will be their third big match of the year. In a year when New Japan has relied on outside names less than it has in years, they have had to repeat some big name matches, but this one has turned out to be a stunning rivalry. Nagata lifted the title from Tanahashi this April in Osaka, an exciting match that received quick "match of the year" type feedback. Then just recently in the G1 Climax final, both men having endured tough semi finals, Tanahashi became the first member of the young generation to win the G1 by pinning Nagata. This meant that going into their decisive match for the title, the two are 1-1 in 2007, with much on the line. This has become a rivalry that has exceeded the "generation fight" theme and turned into a battle of two equal rivals.

The signing ceremony was held today at New Japan offices, with a civil atmosphere maintained. Tanahashi believes he and Nagata are the "two peaks" of New Japan right now, having shared many of the spoils this year. But the previous champion doesn't believe New Japan needs two peaks, just one, and hence plans to take the belt back off Mr. Saikyo and become the "true peak". Both men are sure this can become a classic fight, but are each equally sure they will leave it with the title.

    G1 Tag League 2007 entrants by Stuart - 25 Sep 2007
New Japan announced the participating teams for the upcoming G1 Tag League, which runs from 10/18 to 11/2. Despite their failed attempt at the tag belts, Nagata & Nakanishi will continue to team, while Tanahashi is set to bring a mystery "X" as his partner. Chono & Akebono reform their dream team, while Iizuka & Yamamoto look to be the underdog tandem this time out. Of course, the IWGP Tag Team Champions are in it, while Hirooki Goto has selected Milano as his tag partner. GBH will have two teams, but have yet to reveal the tandems.

--> "NEW JAPAN 35TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR ~ CIRCUIT 2007 NEW JAPAN GENERATION" <--
Both IWGP titles on the line were successfully defended on today's tour climax in Hiroshima. In what was their toughest challenge as a team yet, Bernard & Tomko overcame the third generation all-star combination of Nagata & Nakanishi in a quarter hour main event for their IWGP Tag Team Title. It was Nagata who the foreigners isolated, but he somehow survived the Magic Killer, before going down to the Bernard Driver. This loss, a direct one at that, ended Nagata's 2-crown dreams for now. Bernard & Tomko have now beaten Wild Child (Nakanishi & Omori), Tenzan & Koshinaka, Nagata & Iizuka, Tanahashi & Yamamoto, and Nagata & Nakanishi, and appear to be running low on challenges. Next month's G1 Tag League may present some fresh ones for them, though. In a rare case of champion going into the match as the underdog, IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion, Ryusuke Taguchi, made an impressive and successful V1 defense of his belt against Tiger Mask. Tiger Mask came into this challenge having conquered the 4th Fukumen World League in Michinoku Pro, the second time he had taken that trophy, but the young ace of the junior division was too much for him today. Taguchi revealed that Masahito Kakihara had been acting as a "shadow member" of Samurai Gym (which does still exist), hitting Tiger with a Kaki Cutter, before using his more patented Dodon for the victory. Taguchi has a tough road ahead, set to face KAGEKI boss Azteca on 10/7, then if he wins, going up against the man he dethroned for the title, Minoru, on 10/8 at Sumo Hall.

Hirooki Goto continued to defeat Naofumi Yamamoto with embarrassing ease, considering they were once close rivals, and now Goto is winning every singles match they have. Goto's deadly Shouten again made the difference, keeping him unbeaten going into his Sumo Hall match with Tenzan. There were two big junior-dominated matches on today's undercard, which showed the increasing depth of New Japan's roster after there was very little of it at the start of 2006. The Italy Brothers impressively defeated last year's G1 Tag League runners-up, Tanahashi & Kanemoto, Milano again pinning Kanemoto. And in the latest war between these sides, Liger & AKIRA overcame Jado & Gedo, AKIRA completing his return tour to New Japan by pinning Jado.

Yano drops WEW, Makabe conquers again by Stuart - 24 Sep 2007
Toru Yano relinquished his grip on the WEW Heavyweight Title a lot quicker than Makabe at yesterday's Apache Army Korakuen show, as Mammoth Sasaki was able to score a revenge win over him from LOCK UP in a very bloody match. Mammoth landed the Mammoth Home Run, where he breaks a chair over the victim's head, then followed with his 29-years-old brainbuster finisher for the big win, making him an Apache hero after many failed attempts to defeat both Makabe and Yano. Speaking of Makabe, he was also in action in a fresh match for him, defeating Takashi Sasaki. He connected with a chain lariat, struck a fearless smile, then landed his King Kong kneedrop for the win. This was almost a year to the day after Makabe defeated Kanemura to win the vacant WEW Heavyweight Title, and it remains to be seen if he'll still be involved with this company, having beaten practically everyone.
