The Gulfport Yacht Club broke ground Sept. 14 on an $8.5 million clubhouse. The club is expected to be open in the summer of 2008.
Gulfport Mayor Brent Warr, Yacht Club Commodore Michael G. Hage and flag officers and board members turned shovels to get the construction started. The building was designed by Guild Hardy Architects and will be built by Roy Anderson Inc.
The 26,000-square-foot building will include a ballroom, full-service kitchen and restaurant, offices and exterior decks. Other amenities will include a yacht basin with four piers, 82 slips, a visitor's pier and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
