During the campaigns, scant mention was made of the previous gubernatorial campaigns of a Jackson attorney by the name of John Arthur Eaves Sr. Many may not remember much about the elder Eaves, but anyone in the state for more than 20 years surely remembers his theme: The pledge of a $10 car tag.
On warm, autumn days, when there is little wind and low tide, there is an odor that comes pleasingly to our nostrils, the fragrance of the sea, not in the least offensive. It emanates from chemical mixtures of sulfur, ammonia, salt, lime, and also from decaying sea life and vegetation. Some call the perfume, "essence 'd estuary."* We find the pungent smell a natural and soothing one, reminding us that both time and tide are at work here.
Prosperity came to Long Beach long before it was incorporated as a town. The magical topsoil of the area led to the cultivation of the famous Long Red radish. As the city was celebrating its own birth, 150 carloads left that day moving the tangy tasty vegetable to cities north of the Ohio River.
