Forschungsprofil des Osteuropa-Instituts
Die Forschung am Osteuropa-Institut hat die Gebiete Osteuropa, Ostmitteleuropa und Südosteuropa zum Gegenstand. Das betrifft zum einen die historische, kulturelle, politische und ökonomische Genese und aktuelle Definition dieser Region. In vergleichender, interregionaler und transkultureller Perspektive werden Differenzen und Gemeinsamkeiten besonders im Verhältnis zu Westeuropa untersucht.
Zum anderen widmet sich die Forschung am Osteuropainstitut den innerregionalen Spezifika einzelner, politisch, kulturell oder wirtschaftlich definierter Teilregionen. Auch hier sind vergleichende Aspekte von besonderer Relevanz. [mehr]

Accounting for State Building, Stability and Violent Conflict (CSCCA)
Das Projekt “Accounting for State-Building, Stability and Violent Conflict” (CSCCA) frag nach den Rahmenbedingungen für erfolgreiches oder gescheitertes Management von Konfliktpotentialen in den Gesellschaften des Kaukasus und Zentralasiens. Zeitlich bewegt sich das Projekt im Kontext der Wiederherstellung von Staatlichkeit nach dem Zusammenbruch des sowjetischen Imperiums. Die Grundannahme der Analyse ist die Hypothese, dass in Staaten mit schwach ausgeprägten institutionellen Fähigkeiten und mangelhafter Bereitstellung von öffentlichen Gütern die Gefahr des Auftritts von gewalttätig ausgetragenen Konflikten sehr hoch ist. Andererseits können Gewaltkonflikte aber auch eine Strategie zur Etablierung von Regimestabilität sein. Deshalb sind sie oft Begleiterscheinungen von Staatsbildungsprozessen.
Das Projekt wird von der Volkswagen Stiftung finanziert und durch eine Kooperation zwischen dem Osteuropa-Institut und dem Institut für Ethnologie der FU Berlin implementiert.

New and Ambiguous Nation-building Processes in South-eastern Europe
This research project examines four specific nation-building processes in South-eastern Europe after 1945: the Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim), Macedonian, Moldovan and Montenegrin cases. The main focus of the interdisciplinary research of the project is on popular perceptions of nation-building. How did 'ordinary' people in these four countries, faced with communist and post-communist nation-building efforts, appropriate, reject or modify official notions of (new) national identity? What was the role of career migration or nationalisation of cultural practices and symbols for the processes of identification with the new nations? By providing historical and anthropological perspectives, this comparative study of recent and, in some respect, ambiguous nation-building processes, aims to break new scientific ground. In addition, our research will provide new insights into politically-sound and scientifically-relevant problems related to nationalism and national identity in South-eastern Europe. Details
