Gameplay

Front Game Rules

Two teams of two kids (usually boy and girl) each, red and blue, competed. Both teams played a "hidden pictures round" in which both teams were shown a picture with up to six objects hidden inside. The host would give both teams a clue as to which object to find, and the first team to buzz in and find the correct object earned $25 and the chance to search one room in a giant two story, eight room house. In the Nickelodeon run, each team viewed the picture on their own monitor, and would circle the picture with a telestrator. In the syndicated run, a giant picture was shown on a wall, and plastic overlays (from a set that included a few added decoys) were used to highlight the hidden pictures. The round continued until all hidden pictures were revealed or until four rooms were claimed.

In each room a team was given a clue as to which object to find and 30 seconds to find it, being allowed to trash each room as much as necessary in order to find it. They also had to watch out for messy substances and booby traps coming from the walls and ceiling. If a team found the correct object and presented it to the host, they received $50. If time ran out or the team gave the host the wrong object, their opponents received the money.

The second round was played in the same manner with the remaining four rooms at stake, except that each hidden picture was worth $75 and finding an object in a room was worth $100. Also, one room was the Instant Prize room that would give a bonus prize to the team that chose it if they found the hidden object. The team with the most money at the end of this round won the game and went on to the bonus round. If there was a tie, both teams returned to the podium and played another Hidden Pictures round, with the first team to find two objects in the picture winning the game.

End Game Rules ("Room to Room Romp")

The winning team started in one room of the house, and was given a clue to the location of the first of six "hidden object clue cards," found in each of six rooms in the house. The team had to find the clue card, which directed them to their next room and provided the clue to the next card. The team had a total of 90 seconds to search as many rooms as they could, with each clue card they found won an increasingly valuable prize. If the team found all six clue cards, the team won a grand prize.

Notes

  • The record time for the Room-to-Room Romp was 40 seconds, performed during the syndicated run. This was due in part to the producers' tendencies to hide the clue cards in fairly obvious places, and even in plain view at times.
  • During the show's second season, an inset picture of the room was shown to the home audience, with an X placed on top of where the hiddn object was placed.
  • In many episodes, mostly during the first season, the prize offered for the Instant Prize Room was worth more than all of the prizes offered during the Room-to-Room Romp.
