General Strike

The press became involved in the General Strike of 1926 when Daily Mail printers walked out after refusing to print a pro-Government article. Both sides in the dispute – Government and the Trades Union Congress – produced their own newspapers during the strike in an attempt to put forward their own propaganda.

The British Gazette, the Government newspaper, was produced under the supervision of Winston Churchill in the offices of the Morning Post. Other newspapers continued to come out in truncated form, produced by non-union labour.
