Robert Falcon Scott and his four companions reached the South Pole on 7 January 1912, just a month after Roald Amundsen. Realising that they had been beaten by a rival Norwegian party, they attempted to make it back to their supply base. The journey was dogged by misfortune and all the men died only 11 miles from safety. Scott's diary records their heroism and the tragic end to the expedition. His final entry ends 'For God's sake look after our people'.
