The State of the World’s Street Children: Violence report is the first of a groundbreaking and innovative new series highlighting the problems which street children face in their everyday lives. The report, begun in 2005 by the Consortium for Street Children, builds upon the UN Study on Violence Against Children and UNICEF’s State of the World’s Children; both of which fail to adequately address the needs of street children.

The report aims to promote a better understanding of the lives of street children and encourage policy-makers, activists, community leaders and service providers to take action to prevent violence against children living and working on the streets. The first global report of its kind, State of the World’s Street Children: Violence provides recommendations for policies, community support and service delivery drawn from research and agencies working with children in street situations. The report also provides 16 Case Studies highlighting the experience of leading organisations working in the field and the violence which street children must negotiate daily.

Research has already revealed key issues which the Consortium for Street Children and the international community were previously unaware of. Violence is the most significant factor pushing children into the streets and is responsible for children's reluctance to return home.

Children must receive greater support from wider society. Too little emphasis has been given to providing a secure environment in which children can learn and grown in.

The State of the World’s Street Children: Violence report will be launched on the 20th of November in the UK House of Commons. Attendees will include diplomatic staff, politicians, civil servants, NGO representatives and the media.
