Given the cultural, sociological, economic and political disparities in Benin, there are many groups of children facing difficult situations. Large numbers of children migrate from villages to cities, tempted by hopes and expectations of higher incomes and lured by promises made by so-called foster-family intermediaries. Of the child population aged between 6 and 16 years, it is estimated that 99,000 (or 8%) of rural children leave their homes to go and work, with 49,000 (5%) of these travelling abroad. Cross-border trafficking has become a significant problem, but the development of strategies and agreements between host and origin countries and the research and mobilisation of NGOs and international groups have all led to making Benin one of the most active countries in the region in the fight against child trafficking in Africa.
