The war in Burundi had a devastating impact on children and their families, and has left many children abandoned, orphaned, disabled and traumatised in its wake, most of whom are concentrated today in the urban centres. They are approached from a variety of perspectives as street children, ‘illiterate drop-outs’, ex-combatants, separated or non-accompanied children. As with most other countries, the predominant definition is that between children ‘of’ and ‘on’ the street (see earlier country reports for details). One study conducted by UNICEF in 1998 suggested that there were at least 5,000 street children in Burundi, while another in 2000 estimated that around 620,000 children aged 0-14 had lost one or both parents. 10,000 were left disabled, and a further 240,000 orphaned due to HIV/AIDS. However, there has to date still been no comprehensive analysis of the situation of these children, and more precise statistics remain difficult to find.
