In 2002, the Ministry of Social Action and National Solidarity organised with the help of UNICEF, a nationwide survey of street children in Burkina Faso. It found just over 2,000 children living on the streets between the ages of 7-21, of which 62% were between the ages of 13 and 18 and 24% between 7 and 12. Although the total proportion of girls within this group was small (2.6%), over half of these were between 13-18 years old. It is important also to notice the significant percentage of individuals above the age of 18 living on the streets (11.5%) who have put downs roots in the street environment. It is this older population that exerts a great deal of influence over the young arrivals, and upon whom the latter tend to depend for much of their protection.
