Alcohol Diversion
The Alcohol Diversion Program addresses underage possession
and consumption of alcohol and drugs by strengthening personal
decision-making, self-awareness, and family communication.
If there is court involvement, completion of the program can
provide a diversion from court proceedings for a first-time offender. As an
alternative approach, the program uses educational strategies, group process,
and experiential learning to help youth under 18, their families, and young
adults.
It is the program’s objective to help participants develop a
greater awareness of how substance use/abuse can impact them and those around
them.
The Alcohol Diversion Program serves teen and young adult
first- time offenders, as well as those referred for other than legal reasons.
If the youth is high school-age or younger, a parent/legal guardian must
attend with the youth. The family will experience eight hours of group
sessions spread
over four weeks, and will learn about effective communication skills; decision-making
strategies and about how the use of drugs/alcohol impact self, family, and
community.
This program also offers a similar service for young adults
(18-22) that does not require parent involvement. Participants look at use
versus abuse and how one’s actions impact one’s daily life. Regardless of
age, both programs support a greater awareness of how substance use/abuse can
impact the youth and those around them.
Second Offender Program
The Second Offender Program is a more extensive program that is also
broken down into teen/families and a young adult program. It is a 24-hour
program that is held over a period of 12 weeks. Participants are able to look
at their use/abuse in a more in-depth way. Over the 12 weeks, they work on
recognizing the reasons why they use drugs/alcohol and ways in which to alter their
behavior. Through learning to work with one’s body, mind, and emotions in a
different way, participants achieve a greater capacity for making healthy
decisions about how they live their lives.
Drug and alcohol evaluations are also available for teens and young adults to
determine what type of treatment, if any, would be helpful.
Program services are open to the public and are not limited to police, court,
school, or any specific referral. Please feel free to contact the Alcohol
Diversion Program coordinator for confidential information and/or resources
