Message from the President & CEO

Dear Members,

Welcome to 2004 - a year that holds much promise for growth in Victoria's tourism industry. Our January, February and March 2004 Accommodation Survey indicates a 10-15% growth over 2003 - a very positive indicator.

The destination has been receiving tremendously positive travel media coverage in direct response to Victoria being named as the Top Destination in the Americas, and Vancouver Island as the Top North American Island by readers of Conde Nast Traveler magazine.

Tourism Victoria and our member partners also have many special happenings and events to market this year in addition to our already strong market base.

The Butchart Gardens is celebrating 100 Years in Bloom; the Orcas in the City campaign will be launched in the spring; the Royal BC Museum will present the rare, spectacular Eternal Egypt exhibit from July 10th to October 31st; the Royal Victoria Marathon celebrates its 20th anniversary; and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria will launch the Masterworks of 19th Century French Realism exhibit in December.

I also want to draw your attention to the 2004 BC Tourism Industry Conference taking place in Victoria February 25th to 27th. This action-packed event includes a town hall issues session, question and answer session with several key provincial cabinet ministers, a host of professional development workshops and the Tourism BC Awards Gala Dinner. For more information and to register visit www.bctourismindustryconference.ca.

If would like to discuss any of the material presented in this month’s newsletter, please do not hesitate to call myself or any member of Tourism Victoria’s Senior Management Team at (250) 414-6999.

Sincerely,
Lorne Whyte
President & CEO

Changing Market Trends to Influence Travel in ‘04
In November, 50 global tourism executives convened at the 10th annual World Travel Monitor Forum in Pisa, Italy to discuss how the global tourism industry is shaping up for 2004. While the Pisa Forum's collective conclusion was, by nature, speculative ("much better, but not perfect"), the group was more certain about some of the trends that will affect the industry in the new year and beyond.

-Security: There are continuing concerns over safety and security, but it is clear that people are growing more accustomed to living in an unsafe world.

- Health: The same [as security] can probably be said regarding travellers' attitudes to health risks. However, government and the industry cannot be complacent regarding health concerns and travel.

- Length of trips: People continue to take shorter and more frequent trips, but long-haul travel demand is expected to recover in 2004. Nevertheless, some markets will continue to favour domestic and intra-regional travel for some time yet.

- Low cost carriers: The growth in demand for low-cost airlines has been unprecedented, and it is likely to continue unabated as people search for good value.

- Internet: Increases in internet usage to plan and book travel is anticipated. This is expected to result in a continuation of the late booking trend.

- Package tours: Package tours are trending towards partly-packaged holidays, customized holidays and dynamic packaging, instead of the traditional all-inclusive tour packages.

- Business travel: Business travel demand should continue to pick up - possibly even at a faster rate than leisure travel over the next few months.

- Experiential travel: Visitors are increasingly looking for an experience rather than selecting a specific destination.

- Cultural tourism: Demand for authentic cultural experiences continues to increase, especially among the older age groups. Also of growing importance are wellness and educational programs.

Hybrid consumer: Expect more hybrid consumers, looking to combine five-star deluxe accommodation with a low cost flight.

Air Canada Incorporates Fuel Surcharges in Ticket Prices
Air Canada has begun to include the fuel surcharge into its base domestic fares. This change does not affect the final cost of tickets, but advertising and quoted fares will be adjusted to offer consumers a more realistic cost for travel upfront. Published fares for Air Canada, Air Canada Jazz and ZIP will be adjusted to reflect the one-way fuel surcharge of $10-20 depending on the travel distance. Fares for international flights already incorporate the fuel surcharge.
