Types of Apples
There are several different varieties of apples grown in Vancouver Island’s cider orchard: bittersweets for body, sweets for a full, fruity nose and sharps for a tangy flavour and stable product. Few other ciders are made from true cider apples. The varieties grown are proven performers imported from Europe and include cultivars with exotic names like Tremletts's Bitter, Chisel Jersey, Hauxapfel and Frequin Rouge. These are not familiar apple names to North Americans, but very familiar to French and English connoisseurs.
