Southern Gulf Islands
Suggested time: 5 to 7 days
The southern Gulf Islands are located off the shores of southeastern Vancouver Island. The Islands are famous for exceptional arts and crafts, country inns, excellent restaurants, provincial campsites, hiking, kayaking, cycling, and breathtaking scenery.
The five main southern Gulf Islands are listed below. Each one is accessible via BC Ferries from Swartz Bay (several sailings go to each island daily). A number of Victoria-based tour companies offer all-inclusive daytrips and overnight excursion tours to each island. Accommodations are available on all islands.
Salt Spring Island
The largest of the Gulf Islands (population 9,500) is known for its art galleries, artisan studios, a provincial campground, 11 freshwater lakes, historic sites and a terrific Saturday market.
Pender Island
Known as the Island of Hidden Coves and Beaches, Pender has 20 access points to secluded beaches. Island activities include kayaking, canoeing and hiking.
Mayne Island
Mayne is a small, historical island with sandstone caves, historic sites and a swimming beach.
Galiano Island
This small island is known for its scenery. Provincial parks, hiking, sailing, cycling, and fishing are all available.
Saturna Island
This is the southernmost Gulf Island. Hiking, sailing, and fishing are all recreational activities to enjoy while you visit.
