Our cover depicts the young Manuela Gonzalez Velázquez painted by her father Zacarías González (1763-1834), seated at the keyboard.
Zacarías was a member of a famous family of painters and moved in courtly and religious circles in Madrid.
Zacarías González is one of the most important painters from the transition between the eighteenth-century and neoclassical worlds in Spain.
In this excellent painting he portrays his daughter turning her head towards the viewer in a serene and inexpressive gesture. There is a closed score on the music stand, which could well be by Boccherini, the composer of the day in courtly Madrid at the end of the 18th century.
The artist and the composer knew each other and belonged to the artistic circle of the Infante Don Luis.
