Access to Materials
Special Collections of the Oregon State University Libraries contains resources for the use of the general public as well as university students and faculty. The Special Collections Reading Room is not a general reading room but, rather, intended for the use of researchers using the collections. Please remember that Special Collections is a high-security area where many rare or even unique materials are made available to students and scholars under careful supervision to ensure their presentation for generations to come. Close observation of our users is compromised when outside materials are introduced into the reading room. All back-packs, briefcases and other containers must be placed on the tables in plain view. Our space is limited and those not using materials from Special Collections will be asked to find another study location in the library.

Examination of Materials
Permission to examine Special Collections material will be granted to qualified researchers upon completion of the Application for Use form, and agreement to abide by the following rules and policy governing the use of manuscripts. Such permissions are granted subject to whatever restrictions may have been placed on the material by the donors or depositors.

Protection/Preservation of Materials
A researcher is responsible for the safeguarding of any materials made available to him/her in the Special Collections Reading Room. Researchers may not remove materials from the Special Collections Reading Room for any purpose or rearrange the order in which they are delivered. The use of any kind of pen is prohibited. Manuscripts may not be leaned on, written on, folded, or handled in any way likely to damage them. In certain cases, researchers may be required to use digital images, microfilm, or printed copies of manuscript material when such copies are available. Eating and smoking are prohibited in the Special Collections Reading Room.

Permission To Publish
A separate Application For Permission To Publish must be completed. Permission to examine materials does not also extend permission to publish. Except for personally created, that is typed or handwritten excerpts or notes (no photocopying or scanning), researcher agrees not to reproduce or copy the examined material, in whole or in part. Unless an Application For Permission To Publish has been completed and permission has been granted, researchers agree not to publish materials, in whole or in part, in any manner, including on the Internet. Researchers who plan eventual publication of their work should make inquiry concerning overall restrictions of publication before beginning their research. OSU may, in its discretion, choose to grant publication rights to applicants for non-commercial scholarly use only. However, in granting permission to publish, OSU does not surrender its own right thereafter to publish any of the materials from its collection or grant others permission to publish them. If permission to publish is granted, appropriate credit for the cited material shall be indicated in the published work. A free copy of all publications which rely heavily on the material in the OSU Special Collections (except dissertations) must be presented to Special Collections as soon as the work is published. OSU does not assume responsibility for and expressly disclaims any liability for infringement of copyright or other rights in the material held by others.

Duplication of Materials
Photocopies or other reproductions of materials in the OSU Special Collections are provided as a service to expedite research and lessen wear on documents, and are made solely for the personal use of the individual researcher requesting them. Photocopies and other reproductions may not be transferred to another individual or organization, deposited at another insititution, published in any form, in whole or in part (including posting on the Internet), or reduplicated, in whole or in part, withouth prior permission of the Valley Library and Oregon State University Special Collections. PHOTODUPLICATION OR OTHER REPRODUCTION BY VALLEY LIBRARY SPECIAL COLLECTIONS IN NO WAY TRANSFERS EITHER COPYRIGHT OR PROPERTY RIGHT, NOR DOES IT CONSTITUTE PERMISSION TO PUBLISH, DISTRIBUTE, PERFORM OR TO DISPLAY MATERIALS. In some cases, Special Collections may refuse to make copies because of the physical condition of the material, the amount of staff time required to do the work, special restrictions imposed by the donor, copyright law, or right-to-privacy statutes, or for any other reason.

Copyright Information
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposed in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgement, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
