Very atmospheric and influenced (directly or not) by (besides metal) old wave/goth bands like Sisters Of Mercy or Siouxsie And The Banshees. Those were my first thoughts when listening to the debut CD of the Cretan (Greek) band In Heaven. Their music is not very complicated (at times too simple even), carried by guitars as well as keyboards, but most of all Elvira Mitraka's sweet voice. A voice I don't find powerful enough and emotion is lacking, but at the same time it becomes more of an instrument to create atmosphere than to express feelings. In "Life After Death" I start to feel that the emphasis is a bit tooooo much on atmosphere alone (read: I start to get bored), but "Angel Of Darkness" has again heavy riffs and nice piano-type keyboards. Again they manage to create a cool atmosphere, but heavier and more up-lifting. "Come Out, Come Out" includes some dark sort of whispering vocals from guitarist Manolis Varouhas, Elvira's vocal lines are a bit too simple in this song. "Fading Light" is another one that has a more up-lifing spirit, as well as "Lie To Me". "...With You" is a ballad, Elvira sings a bit higher here, some clean vocals of Manolis too in this song. Same goes for the last song, "Forgiven".

In general I find the structure of the songs too simple, but still they manage to create a lot of atmosphere with it. Same goes for the vocals. After several songs you really want to hear (or at least I do) more emotion in them, but sometimes it's nice ("...With You", "In Heaven") and overall they do help in creating said atmosphere. But that alone is not enough to rise above the average level and only time will tell if they will be able to improve the songwriting and musicianship to reach that next level - somehow I do have a feeling that they can. Kali tihi!
