Alaska's Proximity to Russia Called a Plus

02 September 2008The wife of Republican U.S. presidential candidate John McCain defended the national security qualifications of her husband's running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, citing Alaska's proximity to Russia.

Cindy McCain told ABC television's "This Week" on Sunday that Alaska's geographical location had prepared Palin for foreign policy.

"Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia. So, it's not as if she doesn't understand what's at stake here," Cindy McCain said.

Palin is serving a first term as governor of Alaska. She previously served as mayor of the small town of Wasilla.

Meanwhile, Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden again criticized Russia for its actions in Georgia.

"The Russians are trying to do every solitary thing they can to hurt your economy," Biden said at a meeting with Georgian officials Thursday at the Democratic National Convention.
