Anti-social-behaviour / ASBO

This refers to all forms of violence including verbal and physical abuse and threats, whatever the motivation. It also refers to some forms of criminal activity including vandalism, drug-dealing and burglary. An ASBO is a UK court order, which aims to protect the public from people's anti-social behaviour.

Blue Badges

The Blue Badge scheme provides parking concessions for people who have such difficulty in walking that they would be physically incapable of visiting shops, public buildings or other places unless able to park directly outside or very close to their destination.

Census

This is a national count of all people and households in the UK. The count has taken place every ten years since 1801. The Census provides the most complete source of information about the UK population that we have.

Early years development & childcare partnership or EYDCP

This council run body was set up to address issues of quality and level of provision in early education, childcare, and out of school provision for children aged 0-14 (0-16 with special educational needs). The EYDCP aims to create new out of school and pre-school places to increase opportunities for local parents and children.

Family Records Centre

Based in Islington in north London, The Family Records Centre holds the birth, death and marriage records for the whole of England and Wales. If you are unsure of the place where the birth, marriage or death event you are researching took place, this is the best place to start.

The Grid

The London Grid for Learning (LGfL) is a collaborative initiative by the 33 London local authorities. It was launched in 2000, initially to provide broadband connectivity, managed services and on-line content, to serve the education community throughout the London region.

On The Move

On the Move is a monthly council publication designed to give local people information on getting round the borough.

One Stop Shops

Council run One Stop Shops deal with all general enquiries regarding council services. The shops provide advice and information, try to resolve any problems you may have, put you in contact with external bodies if required, and help you to complete complex forms. They also provide free-phone facilities to all council offices.

This council service provides a base for school-focused activities and training, where teachers and managers can meet regarding education-related matters both formally and informally. It also provides a working base for advisory teachers.

Right to buy

This nationwide scheme enabling local authority tenants of two years to buy their homes at a discount.

Skillsmatch

Skillsmatch is a scheme where the council acts as a broker between local job seekers and employers with job vacancies.

Third Sector Database

Third sector is a term which includes not-for-profit organisations in the community, voluntary and faith sectors. The Third Sector Database is a searchable database containing details of not-for-profit services available in the borough.

The Unitary Development Plan or UDP

This is the council's statutory development plan and it provides a framework for enabling planning decisions to be made against clearly defined guidelines. It is the basis for determining planning applications within the borough.

Tower Hamlets partnership or THP

The Tower Hamlets Partnership brings together all the key stakeholders - residents, the council, the police, the health service, public services, voluntary and community groups, faith communities and businesses to plan and provide better services for local people. In particular, it gives residents a much stronger say in the way that services are provided.
