Freedom of information

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 provides for a general right of access to information held by public authorities.

Under the provisions of the Act, all local authorities must have a publication scheme approved by the Information Commissioner in place by February 2003.

The Freedom of Information Act publication scheme (pdf 1mb) sets out what information the council routinely publishes or intends to publish, how the information is published and whether it is available free of charge or on payment.

The Information Commissioner is the independent person responsible for ensuring compliance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

The publication scheme is intended to promote openness and transparency and to ensure that a significant and growing amount of information is readily available without the need for individuals to make a specific request for information.

All the documents available for download here are also available in printed copy from the council’s Freedom of Information Officer or at public access points such as libraries, Idea Stores, one stop shops, local area housing offices and reception areas at other Council offices. View the list (Word 22k) of addresses where copies of the council's Publication Scheme can be found.

Make a Freedom of Information Act request.
