Scottsdale Stadium is
unique among Cactus League training facilities:
it's really an urban facility, as opposed to the
suburban facilities used by other teams. When
you're at the ballpark, you're on the edge of
downtown Scottsdale, with easy access to
restaurants, hotels and shopping.

In terms of the fan
experience, it's an OK ballpark: the rows are
narrow, there's way too many aluminum bleachers
and shade is at a premium. However, the ballpark
has been renovated for the 2006 spring-training
season, and while shaded seating is still at a
premium, the renovations are definitely an
improvement.

New for 2006
Scottsdale Stadium was remodeled for Spring
Training 2006. New at the ballpark: the outfield
berm was completely redone, while a new gift shop
and center-field entrance were added. Visitors to
Scottsdale Stadium probably didn't find the
outfield berm all that comfortable: it was steeply
pitched, and a prime viewing spot in left field
was occupied by the Charros party tent.
That tent is now gone,
replaced by open space. Instead, there's a new
permanent party deck in right field (shown below),
giving prime views of the bullpens as well.

A concourse now wraps
around the entire outfield, and a new entrance and
ticket booth were added to the center-field area.
Also
added: a new center-field scoreboard. The parking
lot and a building to the east of Scottsdale
Stadium are now gone, replaced by a playing field.
The Giants train in the ballpark, while the
minor-leaguers train at a separate Indian School
facility.
