BTW3 Bunbury (South Western Telecasters) began 10 March 1967. Translators were started at Mt Barker on August 1968, and GSW9 Albany which began on 29 August 1974.
VEW8 Kalgoorie began on 18 June 1971 servicing the Western Australian Goldfields area. GTW11 Geraldton began on 21 January 1977.
In the early 1980's, Jack Bendat gained a controlling interest in South Western Telecasters, and changed its name to Golden West Network.
On 31 October 1984, the Australian Broadcasting Tribunal was asked to look for services to run a commertial television station in Western Australia over satellite. Golden West Network was granted the Remote Commertial Television Licence (RCTS) in June 1985.
In December 1985, GWN acquired VEW8 Kalgoorie.
GWN began broadcasting over satellite with its RCTS on 18 October 1986, with call-sign WAW, covering all of regional Western Australia which was not already serviced by a commertial television station.
GWN bought GTW in April 1987.
Kerry Stokes bought GWN in 1988, upgrading equipment across the network.
In April 1990, BTW and GSW stations joined to create SSW.
In December 1996, Prime Television bought GWN.
Until March 1999 GWN was the only television station serving regional WA, but since compete with Win Television. Since then GWN have been an affiliate of the Seven Network. |
