Australia had a long wait for television...
The first transmission using John Logie Baird's mechanical system was made in 1929 by Gilbert Miles in Melbourne, a few years before the first electronic telecast. Dr Val McDonald gained permission from the Federal Government and made successful telecasts from Brisbane's old Observatory Tower in 1934, which led to further experimental transmissions by another Brisbane pioneer, Tom Elliot. He used a 'high-definition' transmission of 180 lines per picture.
John Logie Baird appeared at the World Radio Convention in Sydney in 1938 trying to convince Australia to adopt his mechanical system, which the previous year had been dropped by the BBC. The convention predicted Australia would have to wait another decade for television, but with the country at war the following year, it was not until 1956 that Australians could finally receive television..
