WRA - Interpretive Trail

Ape Cave

  • A three-fourths mile (one way) lower section and 1 and one-half mile (one way) upper section.
  • Become responsible cavers by learning the essentials of caving and caving ethics.
  • Walk inside an ancient lava flow from an eruption of Mount St. Helens.
  • Explain the relationship between Basalt Flows and Lava Tubes.

WRA - Interpretive Trail

Lahar Viewpoint

  • A one-fourth mile one way trail.
  • Evaluate the evidence of the mudflow as it is recorded in the landscape.
  • Explore the impacts associated with natural disturbances.

WRA - Interpretive Trail

Lava Canyon

  • A one-half mile one way paved trail - additional 1-mile loop trail that includes passage over a suspension bridge.
  • Analyze the columnar jointing of this basaltic andesite flow.
  • Make inferences as to how erosion has and is shaping the canyon
  • SAFETY WARNING - Off-trail travel here has been fatal.

WRA - Interpretive Trail

Stratigraphy Viewpoint

  • A one-eighth mile trail to a viewpoint illustrating layered deposits from the 1980 and prior eruptions. Unimproved access leading to the strata layers requires careful footing.
  • Analyze and separate the different kinds of deposits.

Trail of Two Forests

  • A one-fourth mile loop interpretive boardwalk.
  • Enjoy exploring and examining the surrounding environment.
  • Crawl through the molds of ancient trees and explain how they formed.
