Stratigraphy Viewpoint

Stratigraphy Viewpoint.
Forest Service photograph.

  • Open mid-May to late-October
  • Unimproved access to strata layers requires careful footing

The Stratigraphy Viewpoint is closed due to poor road conditions at the June Lake junction caused by 2006 floods. Nestled between Lahar Viewpoint and Lava Canyon lies this gem of Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. Recorded in these earthen pages, are south side diary entries of Mount St. Helens' eruptive history. Analyze each layer to discover the order of material that descended the volcano and how to tell when this volcano was dormant.
