What is the Mayor doing?

  • Promoting London's successful bid to hold the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
  • Made a successful bid for the start of the world's greatest cycle race, the Tour de France, to take place in London during the weekend of 6-8 July 2007
  • Published his Culture Strategy, a ten-year plan to develop London as a centre of cultural excellence and creativity; and set up the London Cultural Consortium to take forward the implementation of the strategy
  • Promoting campaigns with Visit London to maintain the number of Londoners and visitors coming into central London
  • Revitalised Trafalgar Square - 'I made it a manifesto commitment to make better use of Trafalgar Square, turning it into a free, open-air venue that will attract Londoners and tourists alike' - now the venue for many free cultural events
  • Organised Rise (formerly Respect), in partnership with the National Assembly Against Racism and the trade union movement - a free anti-racist festival featuring music, comedy and family entertainment
  • Published his Children and Young People's Strategy
  • Facilitated an agreement enabling the National Sports Centre at Crystal Palace to stay open pending a major overhaul, and allowing the Athletics Grand Prix meetings to take place there
  • Recognised the importance of the film and media industries in London with the establishment of Film London, supported by the Mayor via the London Development Agency; he also supports the London Film Festival
  • Given support to Black History Month every year from 2000
  • Published 'Asian London' brochures promoting Asian cultural events, including the London Mela, each summer since 2002
  • The Mayor's Thames Festival is an annual public event celebrating the capital's river, involving many London schools and community groups
  • Set up Design for London, bringing together the GLA Architecture and Urbanism Unit, the LDA design team and TfL's urban design team
  • Set up the Notting Hill Carnival Review Group, to formulate guidelines to safeguard the future of the Carnival
