Mažeikiai district municipality (Lithuanian: Mažeikių rajono savivaldybė, Samogitian: Mažėikiu rajuona savivaldībė) is in north-west Lithuania, on the Venta River (Telšiai County). The administrative center of Mažeikiai district is the town of Mažeikiai. Territory 1220.2 km², of which 32 km² are towns and settlements, 22 km² - industrial enterprises and roads, 614 km² - agricultural lands, 273 km² - forests, and 68 km² - tracts of other designation. There is one urban elderate and 8 rural ones. Population in 2003 was 67.393, 46.223 live in towns and 21.170 - in villages.

The territory is in the north of Samogitia. In the north Mažeikiai district borders on the Republic of Latvia, in the east - on Akmenė district municipality, in the southeast - on Telšiai district municipality, in the southwest - on Plungė district municipality, and in the west - on Skuodas district municipality. The territory of the Mažeikiai district stretches from west to east for 43.5 km, while from north to south - for 38 km. The utmost end in the west is Petraičiai village, in the east - Kalniškiai and Pakliaupė villages. The northernmost village is Giniočiai, while the southernmost one is Pasruojė.

Mažeikiai district municipality is one of the more populous administrative district municipalities (municipalities, covering mostly rural regions and smaller towns rather than major cities). The region is crossed by important railway lines: Liepāja (Republic of Latvia) - Šiauliai - Kaunas - Vilnius and Riga (Republic of Latvia) - Mažeikiai - Klaipėda. Currently they are not used for passenger transportation anymore however.
