Niccolò Jommelli was born in Aversa in 1714, the same year Philip d’Anjou (grandson of Louis XIV, the Sun King) ceased to be King of Naples. In 1700 d’Anjou had become King of Spain under the name of Philip V.
Here he is portrayed by Miguel J. Meléndez (Madrid, Prado, photo courtesy of Oronoz). Sickly and neurotic, this first Spanish Bourbon ended up half-mad.
When Farinelli arrived in Madrid to alleviate his melancholy, the king lost his voice as a result of shrieking whilst trying to imitate Farinelli, the last castrato.
He married twice to two Italian women. One of his sons (Charles III) became King of Naples, and his palace in Madrid was painted by the best painter of his times: Tiepolo.
