The painting illustrating our cover, 'Portrait of a Young Venetian Lady' by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), was painted by the German artist during his second trip to Venice in 1505. There he was treated as a great artist, receiving numerous commissions before continuing on his way through Bologna and Florence, where he had the opportunity to view the works of Leonardo and Raphael. Upon his return to Germany he was showered with honours and recognition. Erasmus of Rotterdam spoke of him in the following terms: 'He even depicts that which cannot be depicted: rays of light, thunder, lightening… all the sensations and emotions: in fine, the whole human spirit, as reflected in the body’s movements, and almost even the voice'.
