The mischievous face of this young girl is a detail from Georges de la Tour’s painting titled “The Fortune Teller” (1632-35), which is exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. La Tour is one of the most important representatives of the school of the French Baroque naturalist painters and enjoyed significant fame during his lifetime. The painting depicts a scene in which an old gypsy crone reproaches a handsomely dressed youth for poorly paying her fortune-telling services, while her three young accomplices rob the inexpert and proud male. The girl depicted on the cover has one of those apparently innocent-looking faces with a theatrical and easily frightened, yet at the same time, completely naïve expression, as she eyes her companions while robbing a chain from the timid youth.
