La Belle Strasbourgeoise is probably Nicolas de Largillière’s best-known painting. Born in Paris, Largillière (or Largillierre) (1656-1746) lived in Antwerp, where he became a great admirer of the work of Rubens, and in London.
From 1682 he was permanently based in Paris, where he soon became the municipality’s official painter and the most sought-after portrait painter of the French aristocracy and royalty. His works combine the best of the English, Flemish and French schools of painting.
The identity of this beautiful woman from Strasbourg is unknown and it is highly likely that the model was not from this city at all. The portrait reproduced here is exhibited at the Musee des Beaux-Artes, Strasbourg.
The figure is facing the front and the evocative triangular hat dominates the entire composition. Her dress and the small dog she is holding are painted in meticulous detail.
