For this issue, our cover presents a portrait by Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (Fuendetodos – Saragossa 1746 – Bordeaux 1828).
The portrait of Isabel Cobos de Porcel was painted in the year of the death of Vicente Martín y Soler.
The lady is dressed in the mantilla typical of the ‘majas’ of Madrid, and turns her gaze to the left. Her expression is provocative, though perfectly natural.
Working with firm brush strokes, the artist reveals the fineness of the delicate lace mantilla, though without recurring to ornate details that would encumber the picture.
From 1808 and the Peninsular War, the painter's exile and illness radically changed his painting and he began to illustrate his fears and fantasies through his unparalleled avant-garde ‘black paintings’.
