The Portrait of a Young Merchant, is one the most important paintings by Hans Holbein the Younger undertaken while he was at the English court.
It was painted in 1541, two years before the artist's death, and is probably a likeness of one Hans von Muffel, a nobleman from the German city of Nuremberg, when he was twenty-eight years old.
It was the Italian painter, Mantegna, who probably had the greatest influence on the work of the German, who has left us an extraordinary collection of works, as significant for its historical testimony as it is for its artistic quality.
