The Portrait of a Lady by Rogier van der Weyden (National Gallery of Art, Washington) was painted around 1455–1460 on wood, and its dimensions (34 x 25.5 cm) are slightly larger than the cover of this magazine.
Who is the enigmatic lady, so contemplative and sensual? Some believe it is Marie de Valengin, daughter of Philip the Good, powerful Duke of Burgundy and rival of the King of France.
The lady in the portrait lived at the same time as Ockeghem and van der Weyden, and in the same area: Flanders. She was surely younger than Ockeghem. Maybe they knew each other. Perhaps she heard some of his songs and learnt them by heart.
