The woman in Portrait with Ermine, part of which illustrates the cover, is Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603), who ruled England for 45 years. This painting, which hangs in Hatfield House in England, is the work of Nicholas Hilliard (1547-1619), perhaps the best English painter of that period. Queen Elizabeth I was a great admirer of the music of William Byrd, to whom, along with Thomas Tallis, she granted a monopoly for selling printed music. But Byrd was Catholic and at that time the Queen persecuted Catholics. It seems clear that she protected Byrd. In the end, love for music prevailed over religious differences.
