This Portrait of a Woman (Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid) is one of the most beautiful works by the German painter Hans Baldung, known as Grien (green). Baldung was born around 1484 and died in Strasbourg in 1545. He was one of Dürer’s most outstanding pupils and one of the best painters of the sixteenth century. The influence of Lucas Cranach’s Judith, now in Berlin-Grünewald collection, can be perceived in this enigmatic portrait. This timeless, ideal and imaginary woman recalls that of the madrigal D’orrida selce alpina by Schütz, “so inflexible and contemptuous that she seems to have been born deep in the mountains and to have been nursed by a tigress”.
