Together with the Mona Lisa, La Bella Ferronière is one of few portraits by Leonardo da Vinci in the Louvre Museum. Critics have seriously questioned the authorship of the portrait and consider it more likely to be a work by one of his pupils. However, the pose, melancholic and mysterious expression, and delicate features make us want to believe that it really one of Leonardo’s masterpieces. The identity of the beautiful lady portrayed is also a mystery. Some want to believe that she was the lover of the French king , Henry II , who was known as La Ferronière, but she has also been identified as Lucrecia Crivelli, the lover of Ludovico, Duke of Milan. Whatever the case, with Henry and Ludovico long gone, we are free to continue admiring this mysterious portrait, which still hypnotises us today.
