Everything you need to know about DTV

Last Update: 12/04 8:45 am
It turns out there are three certainties in life -- death, taxes and the switch to all-digital television.

there are several basics you need to know about the digitial television conversion.

If you watch TV with cable or satellite you are good to go, no matter what kind of TV you own.

But if you watch with an antenna and have an older TV, you will need a converter box.

"If you're a consumer in america and you use bunny ears or a rooftop antenna to get a signal, you're going to be a affected by this transition,"  says Joel Kelsey with Consumers Union.

If you need a converter box, the government will help you pay for it.

You can apply for up to two $40 coupons. While the converter boxes vary widely in price, a coupon could cover most of the cost.

The coupon is only good for 90 days, so try to use it quickly, but the converter boxes can be hard to find.

"They'd tell us when they were going to come in and we'd go back in and they'd be sold out," said Laura Prather.

Consumers Union, says the Tivax box is your best bet.

"We found the best picture quality, quality that comes very close to a dvd, was the Tivax box," said Kelsey.

With a box like that, cable, a digital television, or satellite you can avoid watching nothing but snow come February.
