To police or not to police...
Society needs to decide what kind of police force it wants. When people's property is being burned and the state thrown into disarray, everyone wonders where the police are. When the police do their jobs by using tear gas, batons or physical force, a large portion of the public disapproves. We need to face the fact that the police have a role to play in society, to be a part of it, to fight crime and, ultimately, to protect public interests.
COMMENTARY
The sources of rage
The whole of Greece is shaken, an image of terrible violence has been projected to the rest of the world and we are all talking about the impasse to which our society has driven itself. How could one killing spark such an explosion? It was natural that a police officer's killing of a 15-year-old boy would shake the country. And it is to Greece's credit that so many citizens - young and old - took to the streets to condemn the murder, to embrace the memory of the lost boy.

A false dilemma
The endless controversy over the efforts to legalize private colleges in Greece goes right to the heart of the failure of our politicians and society to adapt to the times. Taboos, prejudices, political grandstanding and fear of the political cost have all been employed to stymie efforts to deal with reality, keeping the colleges and their graduates in limbo for no reason other than an inability to deal with problems.
