A viewer felt helpless when he had to pay hundreds of dollars for a prescription that was supposed to be covered

Last Update: 12/09 10:25 am
Rick Miller survives on social security and needs a drawer full of medicines to keep him going. When he had to pay more than $350, out of pocket, for one prescription things got even tougher. He says "And I was distressed, I was distressed." The medicine should have only cost $8.15.

Miller says it started when he went to his neighborhood Walgreens to have his prescription filled and was told it wasn't covered. He explains "I absolutely had to have it!" So he paid out of pocket and immediately took it up with his insurance company. When Miller confirmed the meds were covered all along he says he went back to Walgreens, kept a log of all of his calls but couldn't get any results. He says "After six months I didn't know what else to do. I didn't know who to turn to."

So he turned to the Problem Solvers. "I couldn't do without that money. I had to have that money back. It was really important, that's a lot of money!"

We contacted Walgreens and within days the store manager says she did extensive research, found why things had gone awry in the system and quickly refunded miller all of his money.

Insurance experts say be sure you know which prescriptions are covered and what price you're responsible to pay before visiting the pharmacy. For meds you need each month be sure you're not trying to fill them too early or they may show up as not covered.
