SPMVV holds national workshop on Bioinformatics
A three-day national workshop on ‘Faculty Development Programme in Bioinformatics’, organised by the Bioinformatics department of Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam, (SPMVV) started on Friday.
In his inaugural address, T. Ramakrishna, Director (Research and Development), Indian Academy Group of Institutions, Bangalore, highlighted the need for integration of different fields of informatics for its greater use for the benefit of mankind.
Prof. Nagendra from Sri M. Visweswaraiah Institute of Technology, stressed the application of bioinformatics in the field of health, environment, energy and pharmaceutical industries.
He dubbed Bioinformatics as the field of study of biological mechanism through computer models which would save time and cost in designing the new and life-saving drugs.
“Different individuals react to a drug differently and bioinformatics helps the medical professional predict the percentage of the drug effect on the patient. It also helps to study mechanism of the disease in human beings through computer models,” he added.
Speakers drawn from other faculties explained how the science helped develop insect-resilient, drought- resistant crops with high nutritional value.
Around 150 delegates from Uttaranchal, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh took part in the meet.
