Defendant: James Mahnich

Mahnich, 27, of the 100 block of Springside Drive in Round Lake, was charged Dec. 2, 2008 with the Aug. 18 beating death of his girlfriend's dog.
He had told his girlfriend that the dog, a 9-pound Jack Russell terrier-Chihuahua mix named Princess Samantha, injured itself when it jumped off the bed.
The dog died the next day at an Arlington Heights veterinary hospital. The injuries included two broken ribs, police said.
Mahnich was living with the woman at the time in her Palatine home.
