NEWS

Penn State has been awarded a $1.2 million grant -- $80,000 more than its previous contract -- from the U.S. Department of Education to be distributed over four years to the university's student-parents.

Sparse attendance at Undergraduate Student Government Academic Assembly meetings so far this year came to a head at Monday's meeting, which began late because not enough voting members showed up on time.

Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity is working to rebuild and reorganize this year after expelling about 55 members last year following a series of events that violated national fraternity standards.

Habitat for Humanity aims to improve living conditions for low-income families by building houses, but building materials aren't exactly cheap.

Former Academic Assembly President D. Josh Troxell revisited his roots last night at the Undergraduate Student Government Senate meeting to share his "vision statement" as a State College mayoral candidate.

With their arms entwined, Ben Holsinger and Heather Whidden ascended the steps of Old Main yesterday, turned to the crowd that had gathered below and announced that they were a couple.

A Penn State University Police spokesman yesterday defended the department's actions following Saturday's Penn State football game, saying that any police action would have been criticized, and harsher tactics could have been used.

Six people are gearing up to win one of three vacant State College Borough Council seats in the Nov. 8 election, and many said student issues would be a top priority.

While Penn State visitors see a lot of blue and white, there's a chance they won't see many other colors in Happy Valley this autumn.

News in brief

SPORTS

In many ways, it's one of the more refreshing developments about athletics at the collegiate level.

The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) sent a letter to Penn State president Graham Spanier on behalf of former Penn State women's basketball player Jen Harris yesterday, demanding that action be taken against Lady Lions coach Rene Portland for harassment of players who Portland believed to be lesbians.

At the beginning of the season, former Penn State soccer star Christie Welsh told Tiffany Weimer that records are meant to be broken.

On Monday there was little fanfare for freshman Christa Harmotto's Big Ten Player of the Week recognition.

The life of a student athlete could be described in one word: hectic.

After yesterday's practice, members of the Penn State women's soccer team huddled together and let loose the familiar cry of "We are Penn State!"

So far this offseason, the itinerary for the Penn State women's basketball team has included more than just 5:30 a.m. practices.

Picture a successful junior tennis player, working his way up the national rankings, playing in tournaments around the country, looking ahead to a collegiate career.

Ever since Penn State defeated Michigan State to cap an otherwise disappointing 2004 season, the team has been fueled by an actual, or simply perceived, lack of respect.

Joe Paterno made it abundantly clear that his team was not overlooking this Saturday's game against Michigan (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten).

Coming to State College for a Big Ten weekend may be the most difficult thing in the country.

Los Angeles-based dance company Diavolo will prove that dance is, in fact, a sport, when performers show off their acrobatic elements at 7:30 tonight in Eisenhower Auditorium.

The Palmer Museum of Art brings the outsider in with its new exhibition, Wos Up Man? Selections from the Joseph M. and Janet D. Shein Collection of Self-Taught Art.

What comes next for a band that has just finished its first overseas tour in Japan and sold out a show at New York's Tribeca Rock Club?

Allen Street Grill, 100 W. College Ave., will feature Dominick Swentosky (231-4745).
