International Law Internship Program (ILIP)

Western Law’s International Law Internship Program (ILIP) was launched in March 2006, to provide Western Law students with summer international law internship placements. The ILIP provides students with the opportunity to expand their knowledge of international law and international issues while applying their legal knowledge and skills in a professional environment. It is an enriched educational experience that could increase a student's marketability and open a a new world of opportunities.

In many of the internships, interns are asked to research and analyze international law issues.  In addition, interns may be asked to assist in court (for clerkships), in United Nations sessions or international, governmental or nongovernmental meetings.  Some internships provide interns with the opportunity to undertake fieldwork.

Internships typically last from early or mid-May until some time in August.  Students must be in their first or second year of law school when applying.

Please feel free to contact Professor Valerie Oosterveld at vooster@uwo.ca or 519-661-2111 ext. 80037 for more information about the program.

Kate Leslie – World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland

student intern“My internship at WHO was a great opportunity to grow and develop as a nurse and a lawyer, and as a human rights advocate. My passion regarding the need for strong advocacy and legal reform in this area has grown in my legal studies, and was confirmed through my internship experience this summer. I was able to utilize my legal research and writing skills, while working on new and exciting projects. My supervisors gave me a very high level of autonomy while still providing feedback and support. I was able to gain needed and relevant international experience in my area of interest, and increase my understanding of mental health on a global scale. Through my project work on educational modules, I hope to be able to influence and encourage more individuals to not only reflect on these issues but to take positive action and create change.” [read more stories from students]
