Chapter II: About Daikatana

1.    What is Daikatana?

Daikatana is a 3D first-person action game developed by ION Storm. Daikatana contains a unique story, a vast amount of diverse environments to explore, ranging through 4 different time zones. It includes an enormous amount of enemies, weapons, 2 Artificial Intelligence(AI) Sidekicks, and spectacular 3D-accelerated graphics.

2.    What's the story of Daikatana?

(From the Daikatana manual. Copyright 1997, 1998, 1999 by Ion Storm, Inc.)

History of the Daikatana
During the 16th Century, the Shogunate Mishima ruled over the people of Japan with an iron fist and a bloody sword. Their only opposition came from the Ebihara clan--a group of warriors dedicated to overthrowing the brutal regime.

After years of trying to rid themselves of the Ebiharas without success, the ruthless leader of the Mishimas came up with a plan. Disguising his true intent, Osaka Mishima hired legendary swordmaster Usagi Miyamoto to create the ultimate weapon: the daikatana. Turning to the mystic arts, Usagi cultivated a vast template of arcane knowledge from which to forge the sacre sword--a sword capable of endowing its wielder with the ability to travel through time.

Well aware of Osaka's malevolent nature, Usagi refused to hand such a powerful weapon over to the Mishimas. Instead, he offered it to the Shogunate's nemesis, Inshiro Ebihara--but only on the condition that it be returned to him after the evil Mishimas had been vanquished.

In an epic battle atop Fujiyama, Inshiro used the awesome might of the daikatana to decimate Mishima's legions. Thousands died on that battlefield...and the Mishimas were finally overthrown. Convinced that the mystic sword was too powerful to be wielded by mere mortals, Usagi threw the daikatana into the heart of the raging volcano. And there it remained for the next thousand years...

The present
It is the year 2455 C.E., and expert martial arts instructor Hiro Miyamoto is confronted by a mysterious stranger named Toshiro who claims to have descended from the ancient Ebihara clan. Taking Hiro into his confidence, Toshiro recounts the tale of the daikatana and tells him of how the long-lost sword was recently recovered from the bowels of the now-dormant volcano and then stolen by Kage Mishima, a descendant of the evil Osaka. Hiro is skeptical as Toshiro explains how Kage used the sword's magical properties to travel back in time in order to acquire a vaccine for the highly infectious Mutagenic Marburg-Pox filovirus that has nearly wiped out over thwo-thirds of the planet's inhabitants.

Stealing the vaccine from one of Torhiro's ancestors, Kage Mishima used his knowledge from the future to establish himself as a scientific genius and take credit for the cure. With the new resources at his command, he then built a vast financial empire and set himself up as the self-appointed ruler of the modern world--effectively rewriting history to suit his diabolical purposes.

Adding to Toshiro's concern is the fact that his daughter Mikiko, whom he trained since birth to wield the daikatana in case it were ever found, has been missing ever since she struck out on her own to retrieve the stolen sword from Kage.

Seeing as how the swordmaster who forged the daikatana is Hiro's ancestor, Toshiro feels that no one is better suited to rescue his daughter, recover the sword, and change history back to the way it was than Hiro himself.

Before Hiro can get a chance to reply to the old man's supplications, he and Toshiro are suddenly ambushed by a cadre of Mishima's ninka assassins. Though Hiro quickly disposes of the assassins, Torhiro is mortally wounded during the scuffle.

With his dying breath, Toshiro desperately pleads with Hiro to embrace his noble heritage and accept the call to adventure. Reluctantly, Hiro agrees.

Bracing himself for the coming conflict, young Miyamoto must find a way to penetrate the defenses of the heavily-fortified Mishima Industries Headquarters building were Mikiko is being held captive.

Naturally, the entrance to the fortress is fraught with danger and hidden perils--its perimter guarded by laser cannon turrets and automated monstrosities that have been genetically engineered to use extreme force against any unwelcome trespassers. Equipped with cybernetic enhancements surgically grafted to their carcasses, these lifeless harbingers of destruction are the sinister by-products of secret experiments being conducted within the massive bunker.

With nothing short of the world's fate at stake, a determined Hiro embarks on the quest of a lifetime. One that will tax his stamina and endurance to their limits--and change his life forever.

3.    What are the features of Daikatana?

  • 32-bit Alpha Blended Textures
  • Volumetric and Distance Fog
  • Weather Effects such as Snow and Rain
  • Enhanced Sky Technology
  • Specular Lighting on Models
  • Vertically Displacing Fluid Surfaces
  • Beam System for Particle Effects
  • Node-Based AI System
  • Experience-Point Based Skill System
  • Unique Per-Level Color Pallette
  • Multiple Weapon Decals
  • Toggleable Save Gem Savegame System
  • Complete In-Engine Cutscene System
  • New Multiplayer Modes such as Deathtag and Instagib
4.    How do the characters play out?

You play in single player as Hiro Miyamato, and are often times accompanied by one or two AI Sidekicks, Superfly Johnson & Mikiko Ebihara. When any of you die, the current game is over and you will need to load a previously saved game. The Sidekicks can carry most of the same weapons as you, but they avoid picking up splash damage weapons that they might accidentally harm you with. That doesn't mean that they can't hurt you with "friendly fire," however, so keep your situational awareness during combat. Don't worry about them stealing your ammo, though; each of the levels has weapons that are specially tagged for the Sidekicks to use. You can also manually direct them to take weapons, ammo, and health that isn't tagged for them, if you are at full capacity and they are not.

5.    How many enemies are there?

There are 54 enemies in Daikatana. Each (save for one) is unique to the episode it appears in, ranging from robotic tank boars in futuristic Japan to skeletons in ancient Greece, and from fireball-spitting bats in Dark Ages Norway to chaingun armed gang members in futuristic San Fransisco. (The only monster that appears in more than one episode is the rat, but with how prolific rats are is this any surprise?)

6.    How many weapons are there?

Daikatana has an arsenal of 25 weapons, including the Daikatana sword itself. With the sole exception of the Daikatana itself, you can not take any of the weapons from one episode into another.

7.    What are the different episodes?

Daikatana contains 4 episodes. All four of these episodes are in a different time period and location.

Kyoto, Japan - 2455 CE
Athens, Greece - 1200 BCE
Dark Ages, Norway - 560 CE
San Francisco, USA - 2030 CE

8.    When will Daikatana be released?

Daikatana is in stores now! Daikatana was released in May of 2000.

9.    Music/Sound Effects

Daikatana has 16 music tracks featuring work by Will Nevins, Darren Walsh, Will Loconto, and Stan Neuvo. Each episode has a variety of music that compliments the visual style of the environment around you. Daikatana contains hundreds of lines of spoken dialog, from scripted-cutscenes to random (and battle!) chatter from the Sidekicks. There are a variety of ambient sound effects in each episode, ranging from rainfall to machinery to water sounds. The sound of your footsteps changes as you walk on different surfaces and climb ladders made from different materials. Each of the 25 weapons has a distinct, unique sound effect.

10.    Is there a demo available?

Yes! Go download the Full Daikatana Demo here! (Be forewarned, it's 100+ megs in size.)

Ion Storm also previously released a multiplayer-only demo version of Daikatana. The base multiplayer-only demo can only be played on Mplayer's game matching service, but there is an additional set of files that allow LAN and internet play. For more information on the demo and patch, check out the files section on Planet Daikatana.

11.    How many languages did Daikatana ship for?

Six different languages.

Chapter III: Daikatana System Requirements

1.    What are the bare minimum system requirements for Daikatana?

Computer: 100% Windows 95, Direct-X compatible computer
CPU: Pentium 266
Memory: 32 MB RAM
Graphics: 3D Accelerator required
Sound: 100% Windows 95/98-compatible - 16-bit sound card
CD-ROM: Quad-speed or faster CD-ROM drive
DirectX - DirectX version 7.0a

2.    Will Daikatana be ported to any other systems?

Yes. Look further in this document for the Ports3.    Will Daikatana take advantage of 3D accelerators?

An OpenGL 3D accelerated video card is required to play Daikatana.

4.    How many CDs will Daikatana contain?

Daikatana shipped on 1 cd.

5.    Will you need a CD to run Daikatana?

Yes and no. The retail 1.0 version of Daikatana contains CD-checking code that requires you to have the CD in your CD-ROM drive. The US-only 1.1 patch removes this requirement, thus reducing the amount of time it takes to load the game. The worldwide (foreign) v1.2 patch removes the CD-check for international owners of Daikatana as well.

Chapter IV: Multiplayer

1.    How do multiplayer games play out in Daikatana?

Fast and furious.

Daikatana multipayer shipped with cooperative singleplay, co-op deathmatch, deathmatch, capture the flag, and deathtag modes. In co-operative mode, you will go through the game together, as a group. Co-op deathmatch will pit two teams playing in a co-op environment with monsters; each team will try to kill the most monsters (while at the same time killing each other off) and finish the level first. In the deathmatch mode you can play as any of the characters fighting against each other. Capture the flag will pit two teams against each other trying to sieze the other team's flag and return it to their own. Deathtag is a four player gametype in which two teams attempt to compete for points, scored by hitting switches, instead of frags.

Since player attributes will be used in Daikatana, the multiplayer games will also include them. To maintain game balance the amount of experience points gained when killing an opponent are determined to their experience level. You'll gain more points by killing a more experienced opponent, and less if you kill a beginner. The physical appearance of the players will change when they increase an attribute. For example if a player increases their strength attribute, they may double in size.

2.    Can you play as other characters?

You can play as any of the three main singleplayer characters (Hiro, Mikiko, & Superfly) with multiple skins. If skills are activated on the server, which character you pick affects the skills you spawn with.

3.    How many players are supported?

Theoretically the Quake 2 engine is capable of supporting 64 players, but realistically 32 is a very high number and 16 is most common (and best for server CPU\\bandwidth useage).

4.    Are there any extra multiplayer goodies I should know about?

So glad you asked. Go and get the Map Pack, and revel in the glory of 11 new maps, 2 new songs, and over 700 new textures. (*drool*)

5.    What are the minimum requirements for a Daikatana Server?

Daikatana.com reccomends a 300mhz machine or better to get the most out of your single-player Daikatana experience. We reccomend using a server in that ballpark range as well. I run a server on an Athlon700/128mb running on a T1. A cable modem should do the trick, as long as your service provider has not limited the amount of bandwidth is available to you on downstream (you can leech files, but set up an mp3 server, and your users get 2-8k/sec). Also, on cable modems, check with your service provider to make sure that hosting a game server is not a violation of their Terms of Service.

6.    Why should I host a dedicated server?

Why not? If you've got the bandwidth, and you've got the machine that can handle it, you should most definitely host yourself a server. It's a win/win situation. The community wins because there is another place to play Daikatana online, and you win with the ladies, since no fine woman can resist a pick-up line like, "Hey...did I mention I run my own Daikatana dedicated server? Wanna see?"

7.    Can I host a dedicated server and still _____?

Surf the web?
Check my email?
Play Minesweeper?
Edit an Office Document?
Goof around in Photoshop?
Pretty much, Yes. The only things I'd avoid while running a dedicated server would be:

Streaming video (sucks bandwidth which the game could use)
Memory/processor/hard drive intensive utilities.
No defragging while others are playing.
Playing Daikatana on the same machine while the dedicated server is up.

8.    How do you set up a dedicated server?

One easy way to do this is to browse to where the program DAIKATANA.EXE is, and run it from there like this:

D:\Games\Daikatana\DAIKATANA.EXE -dedicated [options here, see below]

Further down the list you'll find a list of common options that you can set for your server, along with a brief description of each option, and some examples.

9.    Can I create a shortcut on the desktop that starts the server?

Sure you can! First, create a shortcut to Daikatana on your desktop. Then Right-Click the icon, and select Properties. Now, in both Windows98 and NT, you will see a text-box named 'Target' with the path to DAIKATANA.EXE in there. Sometimes, the path and the executable will be enclosed in quotation marks. Just add your server options (below) to the end of that line. If the target is in quotation marks, add your options AFTER the quotes, like so:

Target: C:\games\daikatana\DAIKATANA.EXE -dedicated +set dm_same_map 0
Target: "C:\Program Files\Daikatana Demo\DAIKATANA.EXE" -dedicated etc.

10.    How can I list my server with the master server?

Run DAIKATANA.EXE with the +set public 1 option.

11.    Why would I want to list my server with a master server?

If you do not set public to 1, you are running a private server, only joinable via someone entering in your IP address. Setting 'public' to 1 will alert the master server that you are running a game, what kind of game, etc. Others will be able to see your server via GameSpy, or through the embedded server browser in Daikatana.

12.    What are some options I can enable/disable on the server?

This is far from being the canonical list of server flags. These are enough to get you up and running, though. A full list of flags is in the file current.cfg.

  • set dm_spawn farthest
Player spawns farthest from other players. 0 by default
  • set dm_weapons_stay
0 by default. If set to 1, weapon stays where it is. You pick it up, use the ammo, then must find more ammo, or forget about using it again.
  • set dm_skill_level
0 by default. I suppose this would set either the max skill level a player can attain, or set the default skill level for all players. Haven't been able to get this one to work.

13.    How about you just give me a simple command line to set up my own server?

Oh, you don't want to take the time to make your own server config, eh? Well, here is the one I use: C:\games\DAIKATANA.EXE +set console 1 -dedicated +set public 1 +set dm_same_map 0 +set fraglimit 30 +set hostname DaikaHooHah +set maxclients 10 +map E1DM1

This sets us up for a 10 player game that starts off on Gibbler, where the first person to 30 frags wins. The map then cycles on to the next map. (Note: Please don't use the servername DaikaHooHah. Why in Gwog's name would you want to, anyway?)

14.    What is a .cfg file?

Historically, one could create a single file containing all of the server options. This aided the server admin in that their command line for Daikatana was not longer than their own arm. Think of it like a DOS batch file.

With Quake2, one could call C:\games\Quake2.exe +exec SERVER.cfg. The file SERVER.cfg would contain all of the server flags and their settings, one for each line.

15.    Can I use a .cfg file in Daikatana?

Sure, why not? Don't ask me how, though. I haven't yet delved into that. The FAQ will be updated with that information as soon as I have some to share.

16.    How do I control a Daikatana server remotely?

(By Bloodstain) So, you have a server up and running.... Wouldn't it be nice if you could control it remotely from inside DK?? You can!! My server sits about 7 miles away from my house. Physically sitting in front of the console is not possible. Enter the "rcon" command.

(If you haven't done so already, you should REALLY have a server.cfg, as mentioned previously. You can have different cfg files that do different things. Say you want to run a Team DM without falling damage?? Edit your existing cfg, and save it as a different name, indicating what type of game it is. This way you will only have to run a different cfg rather then restarting the server. )

There are a couple of steps to setting up rcon. First, is to set the password for rcon sessions. In ALL of you server cfg files, add the line:

rcon_password [password]

Remove the []'s and choose a unique password. You wouldn't want people getting into your server and screwing with your players :)

Now that you have set the password on the server, you can now issue server commands from the DK's console. To access the console, you must launch daikatana.exe with +set console 1 on the command line. This will allow you to access the console by pressing the "~" key.

Sending console commands is very simple with rcon. The first time you send commands, you need to include the rcon password with your command.

rcon [password] status

This sends the "Status" console command to the server. If your rcon password is correct, you should see the status of your server in the DK console. Once you issue a successful rcon command you do not need to send the password again, during that session. So if you wanted to check the status again, you would enter:

rcon status

What if you have different servers you need to admin remotely?? Not a problem. You can specify which server to send your commands to by using the rcon_address command. In you client's console type"

rcon_address [address]

You will now be able to admin the other server(s).

Here are some other commands that were left out of the previous list.

status - This is used on server consoles to see who is on your server, what their pings are, their scores, what map is being played, and what their userid is (more on that in a minute). Just type "status" (without the ") to see. (This can be issued using the rcon command)

kick - This useful command will "kick" a user off of the server. To kick a person, you will need to know the userid the server has assigned to the player. You can get this info by issuing a "status" command. The userid is a number, not the players name. Find the userid and type the following:

kick [userid]

Chapter V: Daikatana Editing

1.    Is Daikatana editable like Quake/Quake2?

You bet Daikatana is editable. Check out our Editing section for editing tutorials and resources, and our Level Editing Forum as well as Rust's Daikatana Editing forum for community assistance.

2.    Where can I get the tools?

IONRadiant - This is a direct link to the FilePlanet download of IONRadiant, the custom-modified version of QERadiant that was used by ION Storm to create DK maps. The download includes a utility for converting custom textures into DK's .WAL format and pallette.

3.    Are there any Daikatana tools beside the editor?

The Planet Daikatana Files page has a full listing of third-party tools and utilties that are useful for DK editing.

Chapter VI: Retail Files

1.    Are there any patches for Daikatana?

There are 3 patches available for the US version of Daikatana. Version 1.1 is 44megs in size. Version 1.2 is 24megs in size. Alternatively, there is a Version 1.0 to 1.2 patch that is 46megs in size. Please note: there are reports that IONRadiant will not work properly with this patch installed. Please be aware that you must have a full install of Daikatana for the patches to work, your savegames will not work after the patch, and the patches can possibly take a very long time to install. (There have been reports of the 1.1 patch taking 4 hours, and a faster system doesn't necessarily mean a faster patch time.) As long as you can see the lightning bolt animating around the green ION Storm logo on the patch-installer splash screen, your system hasn't hung and is still crunching through the patch. When the patch is complete, you can use the cheats to start on the map you'd made it to, and to regain your stats (the Daikatana itself can not be leveled-up through cheats).

There is a single 1.2 UK version of Daikatana, which incorporates all of the changes made in both the US 1.1 and 1.2 patches. You can get it in one 46meg file, or 5 smaller files. It requires a full CD install of DK prior to patching. Read the US 1.1 and 1.2 savegame warnings!

2.    Are there any goodies for Daikatana?

If you consider a Map Pack containing 11 new maps, 2 new songs, and more than 700 new textures a "goody," then, yes, there is.

Several of the installer arts have also been released as large image files suitable for a desktop background.

There's also the Women of Daikatana image, featuring level designer Stevie "KillCreek" Case.

Chapter VII: Tech Support

1.    DEMO Tech Support

Things to do first (in this order) BEFORE you read the rest of the FAQ: Be sure to have the latest drivers for your video card. If you are not familiar (or comfortable) with updating video drivers, run GLSetup.exe (included with the demo or from GLSetup.com. If you're up to downloading and installing the latest and greatest available to you, VoodooExtreme has a very detailed reference-driver section with links to the latest downloads for all the major card\chipset manufacturers' reference drivers. After you've installed the drivers (and rebooted), download and install DirectX8.

Thanks to forum dwellers Dputiger, Lordie999, This Game Blows (ehh..), RedBeard, rev_suicide, Flava_Clown, vassteel, and Romero for these answers. If you do not find an answer to your question here, then try posting about it on the Planet Daikatana Tech Issues forum.

I have a Voodoo/3DFX family video card and am having problems with either the Daikatana Demo or retail version 1.0.

First of all, if you've purchased the U.S. retail version, download and install the v1.1 patch which will allow you to choose 3dfx from the Video menu. If you're still running the 1.0 version (U.S. or foreign) or the demo, the fix for 3dfx boards in DK is pretty simple. What you need to do, specifically, is change 4 lines of code in the Daikatana.cfg and current.cfg files.

There is one line of code that reads:
set gl_driver "Opengl32"
Change this to:
set gl_driver "3dfxgl"

The other line you're looking for is this:

set gl_texturemode "gl_linear..."

I don't remember what originally came after the gl_linear line but it doesn't matter--delete the excess until this is all your left with.

set gl_texturemode "GL_LINEAR"

Another possible option:
the only fix I got was to download the minigl drivers off of http://www.3dfxgamers.com and manually extract them to a temp directory, then copied the 3dfxgl.dll for quake2 to the diakatana dir.

Or:
an easier way is to use the opengl32.dll from the "glquake" dir (in the minidriver set) so you don't need to change the current.cfg and the daikatana.cfg

Advanced Option:
If you have a Voodoo, Voodoo2, any of the Voodoo3 family of cards (2000, 3000, 3500, etc), or any of the VSA-100 cards (Voodoo4\5) Metabyte's Wicked3D GL could offer you substantial performance improvements. They require you to "register" with them before you can download the driver, but to date the only e-mail ever received from Metabyte has been the auto-reply that gives you the actual URL from which to download Wicked3D. NOTE: WickedGL now has a "force 32 bit" option for owners of Voodoo4 or Voodoo5 video cards, as well as an option to create caches of compressed textures for use in ANY game (the caches DO take up permanent disk space).

I am using the pirated beta version from February '00 and am having problems.

You are using an old pirated beta. Beta means not signed off on as production-quality. Pirated means not paid for. All bugs encountered should be considered karma.

I am having trouble getting Daikatana to run with the Diamond Viper II (S3 Savage 2000 processor)

Download the new Viper 2 95005 drivers.

At the difficulty selection screen, I'm prompted to choose twice. After the second prompt, I'm bumped out of the game and get a Sys_Getgameapi without SysUnloadingGame.

When you uninstall Daikatana, it doesn't remove all the files. You have to go to your c:\program files\eidos interactive\daikatana directory and delete all the files in that directory. I think the folders are dll's and data. Destroy all the info in those files, then reinstall.

Multiplayer is laggy or extremely choppy.

The server should have its CONNECT RATE turned up to T1/LAN (in the Multiplayer Menu). Make sure your client connect rate is turned up as well.

The game is too dark.

Check out the README.TXT file, it has some useful tips.

I own an Asus Geforce 6800 DDR and my screen stays dark! My monitor goes into standby mode, although I hear some game sounds in the background. All adjustments like gamma control etc. do not help. The monitor comes back to live only after I exit DK.

This was a known issue with an earlier iteration of the nVidia Detonator drivers. To resolve it, update your video drivers.

How do I get the Panther XL Controller to work with the game?

Download the old demo of the game from www.happypuppy.com. In the data folder of the game is a file called pxl.cfg. I copied and pasted it in the new game's data folder and in the game there is a config setup in there, should be the panther xl cfg just apply it.

2.    Loading Plaque Timeout

two solutions.

[1] Install a patch

[2] Turn off 'Internet Sharing'

Before telling you how to do this, please note that I have no idea on whether your current system setup requires Internet Sharing to be turned. Follow the instructions below at your own risk. If you aren't sure if this'll mess anything up for you, then DON'T DO IT, and ask someone that knows.

Go to START, then SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL, then ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, then click the WINDOWS SETUP tab, then click once on INTERNET TOOLS, then click DETAILS, then uncheck the INTERNET CONNECTION SHARING option.

Chapter VIII: Cheats

1.    I'm a lame wannabe-cheater; tell me how!

First, the console...

In order to access the cheat codes in Daikatana, you have to first enable the console. The following are some descriptions of this process for those who have never utilized a console in QuakeX engine games.

What is a console? In games powered by the quake engine, there is a method of passing commands and variables straight to the engine through a command-line-like interface. This interface is called the 'console', and is activate by hitting the tilde key (~), which is up next to the one (1) button.

How do I activate the console? Running Daikatana normally means you cannot access the console. In order to get it, you have to use the +set console 1 command-line parameter when first starting up the game. This can be done several ways.

  • From the RUN line (Click the START button, then Run), BROWSE to your Daikatana executable in your Daikatana directory, then add the +set console 1 line outside the quotes. It will most likely end up looking like this: "C:\Program Files\Eidos Interactive\Daikatana\daikatana.exe" +set console 1
  • set up a batch file in your Daikatana directory. Using a text editor, make a small text file called daikatana.bat that contains the following line; daikatana.exe +set console 1. Then just run that file instead of your usual daikatana.exe
  • Use a text editor to open AUTOEXEC.CFG, CURRENT.CFG or your individual user config file (all found in \Daikatana\data\) and put in the command "console 1" with no quotes. What the hell, put "cheats 1" in there too while you're at it. Backup your files before you mess with them.

Next, the cheats!

Once you are in Daikatana and can bring down the console by hitting ~, then you have to type cheats 1 or put "cheats 1" in your config file. Then just bring down the console, type in whichever cheat you like, and have fun! Please note though that you must retype 'cheats 1' every time you progress to a new map during singleplayer. TIP: When in the console, you can hit the UP ARROW key to scroll back through commands you've already entered.

GOD God mode/Invulnerable (Type again to cycle through you, Mikiko, and Superfly being in God mode.)

NOCLIP Move through walls. (Type again to turn off.)

NOTARGET Monsters don't see you. (Type again to turn off.)

MASSACRE Kill all monsters and sidekicks.

HEALTH [value] Give yourself [value] amounts of health. (For example, type "HEALTH 37" to give yourself 37 hitpoints on top of whatever amount you already have.) You can also just input HEALTH a bunch of times and it'll go up that way too.

BOOST [stat] Boost your attributes one point. Choices are VITA, ATTACK, ACRO, SPEED, POWER.

BOOST ALL Boost all stats at once.

WEAPON_GIVE_[value] Give yourself weapon in slot [value]. (For example, in Epsiode 1 type, "weapon_give_3" to give yourself the C4 Vizatergo. If you're in Episode 3, you'll receive the Ballista.) The daikatana is always 7. Inputting this cheat multiple times will increase the ammo you have for that weapon, too. Listed below are each weapon with their corresponding "weapon_give_X" value.

    Episode 1
  1. Disruptor Glove (You always have this, and can't "give" it to yourself.)
  2. ION Blaster
  3. C4 Vizatergo
  4. Shotcycler 6
  5. Sidewinder
  6. Shockwave

    Episode 2
  1. Discus of Daedulus
  2. Venomous
  3. Sunflare
  4. Hammer of Hades
  5. Trident
  6. Eye of Zeus

    Episode 3
  1. Silverclaw
  2. Bolter
  3. Ballista
  4. Stavros' Stave
  5. Wyndrax's Wisp
  6. Nharre's Nightmare

    Episode 4
  1. Glock
  2. Slugger
  3. Kineticore
  4. Ripgun
  5. Novabeam
  6. Metamaser

CAM_TOGGLE_X Change the viewpoint-camera. 1 is First-Person (default), 2 is over-the-shoulder (a la Tomb Raider), 3 is directly behind. Be advised that this functionality was never meant to be exposed to end-users, and as such is unfinished and wonky. But fun. =)

Chapter IX: Easter Eggs

1.    Easter Eggs

These aren't in any particular kind of order. Deal with it. =)

  • There are lesbian wall textures in the "Trials of Olympus" DM map by Luke "weasl" Whiteside.
  • Allegedly there's a Romero 'got milk?' texture in the Deathtag map "Hellish Havens."
  • Supposedly, if you look reeeally closely, there are artists' initials in the Ep3 snowflakes.
  • In Athens' e2m3a, there are the initials "LP." The map was done by Chris "guf" Cummings, and the initials stand for Lady Pain, who was, if I recall correctly, a Telefragged IRCop that guf knew.
  • The e1m4a "Crematorium" lobby music (e1_dkdm.mp3) is a Doom song (d_e1m1.mid) slowed down and played backwards.
  • Among the textures there are two showing Romero's face done up as an evil sorcerer, but it's unsure if these show up in the game anywhere.
  • In the DM map "Shallow Grave" by Chris "guf" Cummings, there is a small room across from Wyndrax's Wisp--that you can only get to by noclipping--that has a blue 'f' in it, which stands for fugue.telefragged.com (his mapping site).
  • The legendary dopefish appears, in the polygon, 4 separate times in Daikatana, once in each episode. Killing the dopefish (by melee-weapon only!) gives you half as many stat-points as you need to level-up the next time.

2.    "Did you know...?"

    Did you know...
  • the name "Daikatana" came from a sword used in a pencil'n'paper D&D; campaign dungeonmastered by John Carmack?
  • the Ep3 miniboss Stavros The Sorcerer was named in honor of the legendary C64 programmer Stavros Fasoulas?
  • that in the "Plague Poundings" multiplayer level, only accessible using "noclip," is a room full of lava with a rock in the middle, and according to Luke "weasl" Whiteside there was supposed to be a movie sequence shot in that room, but it was removed in the process of making the game? (From VTD)
  • that IONRadiant has an attitude, and likes to yell "You ass!" at you?
  • the word "vizatergo" (the C4 launcher, you nincompoop!) came from combining two Latin words? In response to this IOTD's caption Romero told us, "Oh, and i came up with the word VIZATERGO by combining two Latin words: VIS and TERGO, which stand for "Force from behind", which is kinda how the C4 fires. :)"

Chapter X: CMDLIST and CVARLIST

1.    CMDLIST

A listing of all the commands in Daikatana. (This list will eventually be on its own page and contain descriptions and useage instructions.)

2.    CVARLIST

A listing of all the client variables in Daikatana. (This list will eventually be on its own page and contain descriptions and useage instructions.)

Chapter XI: Common Walkthrough Q&As;

1.    EM1M4: Crematorium

  • (E1M4a) How do you raise the garage door?
In the control room, "use" all three keyboards and then backtrack to the garage door; it will be open.
  • (E1M4b) How do you get into the little duct using the coffin lift?
First, you have to press the button on the wall to lower the lift. Next, hop onto the lift and then press the button to raise it. Finally, jump onto the narrow lip jutting out of the wall, and walk into the duct.
  • (E1M4b) How do you jump across the red chasm underneath the coffin room floor?
Hug the left-hand wall and run along the little triangluar protrusion. (Make sure that you are RUNNING.) At the end of the protrusion, jump, and voila! (If you still can't make it, check the Cheats section of the FAQ and noclip across.)

2.    E3M1: Plague Village

  • Where are the three stone keys?
The first is inside the dragon fountain (break the ice and then swim to the bottom). The second is in the church cellar. The third is in the graveyard crypt.
  • How the hell do I get the stones to the door they're supposed to open?
Make your way back to E3M1a. Go across the bridge, up the passage, through the tunnel, and you'll get to the back of the church. Shoot the wheelbarrow, then shoot the barrels on the other side of the wall through the hole and they'll blow up, allowing you to get through. Put the keystones in and exit to PASSAGE.

3.    E4M6: S.E.A.L. Training Center

  • I haven't installed any patches and I've hit the bug in the S.E.A.L. Training Center level where I've opened the hatch, but either my sidekicks aren't there, or they are but won't jump down to where I am.?
    You have a couple choices.

[1] Install the patch (Download here), and then use cheatcodes to replay the level. Yes, you have to replay the whole thing.

Hit the tilde key (to the left of your 1 key on US keyboards) and type in map e4m6a.

Once you spawn into the next level, you'll notice that all your weapons are gone and your stats are back down to zero (and the Daikatana is back at level 1 also). Type the following codes into the console to get your weapons back.

    • weapon_give_1: Glock
    • weapon_give_2: Slugger
    • weapon_give_3: Kineticore
    • weapon_give_4: Ripgun
    • weapon_give_5: Novabeam
    • weapon_give_6: Metamaser
Typing in the code several times will get you more ammo.

Now type in the codes to boost your stats back up.

    • boost speed
    • boost vita
    • boost acro
    • boost power
    • boost attack
There is no known code to boost your Daikatana back up.

[2] Ignore the sidekicks, and continue on in the level until you hit the end where it tells you "Cannot leave without Mikiko Ebihara and Superfly Johnson". Hit the tilde key (to the left of your 1 key on US keyboards) and you should see the console drop down and obscure half the screen. Visit this page if you don't know how to access the console.

Type in Cheats 1 and hit return, then Map e4m6c and hit return. This will warp you to the next level, and the cheats will be turned on when you get there.

Once you spawn into the next level, you'll notice that all your weapons are gone and your stats are back down to zero (and the Daikatana is back at level 1 also). Type the following codes into the console to get your weapons back.

    • weapon_give_1: Glock
    • weapon_give_2: Slugger
    • weapon_give_3: Kineticore
    • weapon_give_4: Ripgun
    • weapon_give_5: Novabeam
    • weapon_give_6: Metamaser
Typing in the code several times will get you more ammo.

Now type in the codes to boost your stats back up.

    • boost speed
    • boost vita
    • boost acro
    • boost power
    • boost attack
There is no known code to boost your Daikatana back up.

Note that the very next thing you'll do is fight Kage Mishima, who's a super-hard boss monster... so you might as well go into invincible godmode anyway by typing god.

[3] Install a savegame from VTDaikatana. Simple as that.

Chapter XII: Ports

1.    What gaming systems has Daikatana been made for (i.e. ports)?

In addition to the PC version, there are games based on the Daikatana universe that have been made for the Nintendo64 and the Color Gameboy.

2.    What companies made the various ports?

ION Storm made the PC version, and Eidos Interactive published it. KEMCO made the Nintendo64 and Color Gameboy versions, and Top-Gear published them.

3.    Was John Romero involved directly with making any of the ports?

In addition to designing all the story, game, and level elements (originally for the PC, which was then incorporated by KEMCO for the ports), John Romero also rewrote all the Daikatana Adventure dialogue after he saw how poorly it translated into English from KEMCO's Japanese.

4.    What are some of Daikatana64's features?

  • four eras--25th Century Japan, Ancient Greece, Dark Ages Norway and 21st Century San Francisco
  • rain, snow and lightning
  • particle system for blood and more
  • character building through RPG elements
  • 60 enemies
  • 25 weapons
  • real-time colored lighting
  • 2 player multiplayer

5.    What are some of Daikatana Adventure's features?

  • Four thematically separate episodes
  • greyscale cutscenes
  • extensive dialogue
  • 60 enemies
  • 25 weapons

6.    What expansion hardward does Daikatana64 support?

Expansion Pak Compatible (for high resolutions ), Rumble Pak Compatible (for rumbling), and Controller Pak Compatible (store up to four game files on one Controller Pak)

7.    Is Daikatana64 an exact copy of Daikatana for the PC?

All assets used in the development of Daikatana for the PC were sent to Kemco for use in Daikatana64. However, hardware limitations required extensive retooling of these items to make them run at a playable framerate. Additionally, many parts of the levels were redone to provide different puzzles and game areas. Anyone that has played both, though, will recognize similarities all throughout the game.

8.    Is Daikatana Adventure an exact copy of Daikatana for the PC?

Daikatana Adventure borrows mostly thematic elements from Daikatana for the PC. Puzzles are very different, since the gameplay itself is so different.

9.    What languages is Daikatana Adventure available in?

English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Japanese.

10.    Where can I get Daikatana64 or Daikatana Adventure?

Daikatana64 was originally a Blockbuster exclusive rental in the US (i.e. you couldn't buy it in stores) even though it was available in retail throughout the rest of the world. But in November '00 that changed, and now you can buy it just about anywhere. At the time of this FAQ addition Daikatana Adventure is still unavailable in the US.

11.    Where can I read more about the ports, and see screenshots?

Be sure to visit Planet Daikatana's Ports section for movies, screenshots, previews and reviews, and more.
