In this chat, gamers talk to Romero about the first Daikatana tournament demo that was released to Mplayer. The chat log is taken from a chat that occurred back on the Xtreme Network. When they were bought out by GameSpy, the log became a part of PlanetDaikatana. It was taken and edited by Mplayer.com/ActionXtreme's DarkViper on mplayer.com 03/12/99 @ 4:00PM PST.

CHAT LOG

Chhheeezzzzyyyyy: only 4 weapons? =

John Romero: 5 Weapons including the Disruptor Glove

John Romero: We didn't include the Shockwave and Ultimate Gashands

LeftE-Rit: John, are you at the CPL event?

Chhheeezzzzyyyyy: which do what?

Chhheeezzzzyyyyy: any powerups not included? and how long until teamplay

John Romero: cheezboy: you'll see in the final

strAtEdgE: Here's a question... you work long and hard on a game for years, and then mess it all up by releasing it on a service like Mplayer targeted at computer illiterate newbies: why?

John Romero: cheez: yes, there's more powerups not in the demo

Chhheeezzzzyyyyy: teamplay?

John Romero: I'm not at Extreme Annihilation yet, but will be in a couple hours....

krummas: john, does daikatana have the 10hz problem q2 has?

John Romero: We are doing teamplay right now! It's awesome!

U.S.-SPAWN: I have a Windows98 O/S, a VIRGE DX PCI graphics accelarator, and a Pentuim200mhz Processor, is Daikatana compatible on my computer?

John Romero: Spawn: if your Virge has OpenGL, then Daikatana will run on it. As for your P200 -- definitely. Daikatana runs fine on a P200.

krummas: does daikatana have the 10hz problem that q2 has? or is the netcode rewritten?

John Romero: Daikatana does NOT have the 10hz input that Q2 had. We are using DirectInput. If you have a USB mouse, movement is even smoother than normal. :)

GD-Propaganda: what is the final release day, and will there be a Better network code that q2 and halflife

krummas: it felt like playing SIN on a duke-nukem-map actually...

John Romero: Krummas: the Server runs at 10hz, the client runs at 20hz. In Q2, everything ran at 10hz.

John Romero: Prop: the Release Date will be "When It's Done".... summertime. The netcode has been "updated" so it runs better because of the amount of graphic effects we've been adding...

Chhheeezzzzyyyyy: How do you think daikatana will compete with q3a? I realize that they are different games... but once it is released you will both be competing... DO you think daikatana is more focused on gameplay while q3a is eyecandy? Are you planning to do levels specifically for teamplay?

John Romero: Cheezy: YES

Chhheeezzzzyyyyy: yes

Chhheeezzzzyyyyy: to all ?

John Romero: Cheezy: yes

Locke355: is ionstorm going to be sponsoring like clans.. like id did with quake 1? also.. is diakatana going to have built in support for teams or clans..?

John Romero: locke: id never sponsored any clans.

Jarino: how do i save settings in daikatana? it keeps reverting to defaults every time i join a game.

John Romero: Jarino: Sorry, that must be a bug! It will be fixed.

zman_300: john, your game rocks....will there be a option for playing a server based game on a lan without the internet (halflife)???

John Romero: zman: Yes

GD-Propaganda: What type of elements can be found in "Diakatana" that seperate it from other First person shooters out there: ie. Quake2, halflife, sin, etc.? And btw, you rawk!

John Romero: Prop: When the full game is released, you'll see how much cool, new stuff we've added..... the game as a whole is unprecedented. :)

Boron5: John, how do you feel about the "hype" surrounding daikatana? Is it what you were aiming for with your hmmm, "imaginative" ad campaign, i.e. the "bitch ad". How do you respond to the critism of the gaming press regarding the excesses of ion storm and the less than impressive dominion? Also knowing what you know now what advice can you give to someone wanting to enter the gaming industry? Thanks

John Romero: Boron: Well, there's been some hype, but when the game comes out everyone can decide what they think of it.

Lex_Luthor: I think the weapons are incredible.. I just wish I could use them on someone else's hide instead of rocket jumping all over the levels by myself!

John Romero: Lex Luthor: Get the ACRO boost and it's cool

chupachoop: John, what's your take on the necessity of 32-bit rendering, and how important is it to have for Daikatana?

John Romero: chupa: it's only necessary on TNT cards because of their internal architecture. We are only using 8-bit color source graphics, btw.

krummas: i think that everything you have said so far about what your game does is just the things that the qw-players complained about in q2. how are you planning on recruiting the q2-players (who actually like the tactics that the slower weap-changes add and so on)? q3a will be a nice mix of both games..

John Romero: krummas: If Q2 players change over to DK, that will be nice. Daikatana is a mix of DOOM and Quake with almost no Q2 influences. I'm just making a game that i can get addicted to.

sturbitt: what, in your opinion, are daikatanas weakest points? what are you spending most of your time working on now? what are you planning on doing for a sequel that you won't have time to implement for daikatana?

John Romero: sturbitt: The game isn't finished yet so we won't know the weak point until it's finished. We are spending all our time working on finishing each episode in turn. Sequel-wise, we are including everything in Daikatana1. DK2 will be all-new ideas. :)

shabster: JOHN I LOVE YOU!@#!@ :)

Couper: Why was Mplayer chosen as the service to launch Daikatana? Will there be future relations between Ion Storm and Mplayer?

John Romero: Couper: Yes, there will be plenty of promotions between Ion and MPlayer.

JonJonMackey: John, has it been distracting trying to work with Todd Porter, what with all the controversy and conflict his mind-numbingly stupid actions have engendered? Howdid a nice guy like yourself get hooked up with such a psychotic, no-talent creep?

John Romero: JonJon: you do not know Todd -- he is nothing like your description. Todd is great to work with.

FruxX: How do you think your game will compare to other FPS? From what Ive seen, there is nothing "Revolutionary" about DK DM, seems alot like a q2 mod. What happened to "Design is Law?"...(please no "Well, when the games final blah ...blah..) cop-outs...

John Romero: Fruxx: The demo is only 1/4 of the Deathmatch Styles in Daikatana. The other episodes are completely different.

JonJonMackey: I know his emails, I've read the expose...his actions speak loud and clear, Zero.

ActiveZ: JOHN: Will FINAL DEMO be any different than this Mplayer test?

John Romero: ActiveZ: Yes.

ReV.SuiCiDe: what do u think of what people are saying abouthe game and what d o u think of q3a?????

John Romero: Rev: Lots of people love DK, so i'm not really worried at all. Q3A should be cool when it comes out, i haven't seen it yet. :)

Samuel L Jackson: John. Have do you feel the MPlayer stuff is going? Is it a good site for your game? I saw complaints (on IRC) that you guys were forced to put it on here. Is that true dude?

John Romero: Samuel: Everything with MPlayer is going great! We are happy to be able to let people play DK over MPlayer. People who use IRC are not used to using information services.

Chhheeezzzzyyyyy: Is there going to be more of a powerful weapon in the final release? In q1... in dm3 in particular... it was control of rl and quad... this made the game more exciting IMHO... will there be one present in daikatana? Or as I have seen from the demo, more of a weapon balance similar to q2. Will there be a powerup that really controls the game like q basically did in q1? The powerups ive seen so far are somewhat like the runes of old.... So basically what is it.... weapon balance or similar to q1? =)

John Romero: Cheezy: Yes, the SHOCKWAVE is the "bfg" of the first episode but we didn't include it in the demo.

God Damage666: John, do you have ideas for non-fps games lurking in the back of your skull? Or perhaps the corner of your spleen?

John Romero: God Damage: Hahaha, sure but when it comes down to the decision of which kind of game do i want to spend the next 2 years developing -- FPS titles are really the only kind of game i *really* love!

JAX--TCK: John, how was it different using the quake 2 engine from the quake 2 engine? was it easier or was it just a better engine?

AsasinGL: John, i tell you man, the demo is a DEMO. That's it. And i think it's a Deathmatch demo because you guys have nothing else done, and woul dhave never been able to release a Demo with WORKING monsters and AI or even episode1. I will not get more excited over this game. but hen the full game comes out. I would really like to see a FULLY FUNCTIONAL GAME.

John Romero: JAX: The Q2 engine is better but it was a lot of work converting the entire game over to it. But overall, i'm very pleased with the Q2 engine.

John Romero: Asasin: You've never been to E3. If you have, you would have been able to play the single-player levels with the weapons and monsters, etc. all working. You are simply a wrong boy.

zman_300: John.......Is there an option to play the demo on just a lan....We are hoping to use your demo for the centerpiece of a lan party( FRAGFEST) next weekend.......just want to play lan players only....

John Romero: zman: In one month, a LAN version will be released.

Couper: John : In a previous answer, you mentioned something about Daikatana 2. Are there really plans already to make a sequel? Also : what's Ion Storm planning for E3?

John Romero: Couper: Not right now, but sometime in the future. Maybe right after DK1, and maybe not. :)

AsasinGL: I sure hope I am wrong, because I am looking forwards getting a full game. No hard feelings, I just want to get the game I was promised I will get.

John Romero: Asasin: Believe me, the single-player is great! :)

sPanK-Me-siLLY: John : How many hours (approx) of gameplay is in the single player mode and is it similar style to Halflife(story etc)...?

John Romero: Spank: There will be over 30 hours of gameplay in the single-player. The story is more elaborate than HL and is revealed in a "stronger" way in DK.

Guedde: John, will you be doing any promotions with Internet companies other than MPlayer, such as Download.Net? DK is excellent IMHO...

John Romero: Guedde: No other promotions with anyone else for Daikatana. At least none that have been promised already.

TheContact: Will there be support for 3D sound cards (namely A3d and/or EAX support) Which API do you like better, if either? On something unrelated, what do you think about the trend towards Multiplayer-centric FPS games?

John Romero: TheContact: Yes, there's excellent EAX/A3D support (not in the demo). Multiplayer-centric FPS games are an interesting new trend. BTW, your profile picture IS AWESOME! CHRONO RULES THE UNIVERSE!

Myth_Yer_Owner: Why was MPlayer used for the whole launching process and this chat itself? Is this some precurser torelationships between Ion Storm and MPlayer? Was there any particular reason why this chat was going to be held on mplayer instead of, say, IRC?

John Romero: Myth: because MPlayer is Free and it has a large, organized team of personnel who are dedicated to all aspects of an online community, which includes Gaming.

Diarrhea-Monsoon: ROMERO: WHERE IS JOSH JAY??? HE HA BEATING THAT IS WAY OVERDUE. GET HIM NOW PLEA DAikatana is a good game

SillyRupert: John, what do say to those who think you may have missed your window of opportunity with Daikatana, since it's based on yesterday's tech, and rumor is you were shocked to find many of your ideas already implemented in HalfLife?

John Romero: D-Monsoon: Josh Jay is ..... somewhere. I don't know where.

John Romero: Silly: Not worried. Q3A does not add anything revolutionary to 3D FPS games. It's all in the gameplay, not flash.

dark-viper: Thanks again for coming John!

dark-viper: hope we didn't wear you out ;)

Huckster: Thanks for your time John!!!

Tasha-Chere: Thanks John!!!!!!!!!

Tech-Entropic: Thank you John!

John Romero: Here's a Trivia Question: In the Daikatana Demo Level "Storm Sector 7", what was the original name of the level?

YourUnbornChild: wet land?

Chhheeezzzzyyyyy: dm2? j/k =P

YourUnbornChild: really rainy map?
